Salaf sends letter to police requesting information on alleged missionaries

Religious NGO Jamiyyathul Salaf yesterday sent a letter to the police, requesting Commissioner of Police Ahmed Faseeh to disclose information regarding alleged missionaries in the Maldives.

Salaf’s letter requested the commissioner disclose information on an alleged missionary couple who were caught by the Maldives Customs Services and deported.

‘’Two weeks after the couple was deported, another missionary was arrested in Baa Atoll, with Christian books written in Dhivehi, and you have said you were investigating the case,’’ the letter said. “Therefore, this NGO — which researches these people – has sent a letter requesting you share information about these cases from last year, October 29.’’

Salaf’s letter claimed the police did not replied to a earlier letter, in which they noted the arrest of another alleged missionary, named David Balk. Balk was previously living in Thaa Atoll Kinbidhoo last year, and left the Maldives on December 12.

“The aforementioned person mysteriously managed to flee the country. Jamiyyathul Salaf is very seriously concerned that adequate measurements are not taken against such crimes, and therefore, [police] are not providing the protection to the religion of Islam as stated under the constitution of the Maldives.’’

“We request you to reply to our recent letter and now that we have alleged that no lawful action was taken against people like David, and others who have violated the religious unity of the country and the constitution, and we request you investigate and reveal who was responsible for this.’’

‘’Furthermore,” wrote Salaf, “the above mentioned David was reportedly found recently in the Maldives, after the Immigration Department claimed he was deported. Therefore, we would like to inform you that this is also a case we are eager to investigate. Pictures of people who commit such unlawful crimes should be revealed to the media to alert the citizens of the Maldives.’’

Police Sub-Inspector Ahmed Shiyam said that police will not disclose information of an investigation to any party “unless it is a party to which police should disclose information.”

“Police always investigate and deport missionaries as soon as possible if they are expats,’’ said Shiyam. “If they are a Maldivian we will take necessary actions against them as well.’’

He said that all the missionary cases [mentioned] were investigated and that police took lawful action against the individuals concerned.

  3. Dear Salaf boys

Can you please also investigate pedophiles, corrupt judges, murderers and rapists while you are at it? Please also ask the police what happened to the one tonne of drugs found in a lagoon up north three years ago.

  4. Jamiyathul Salaf is not an investigative body. It has no authority to proceed with criminal investigations. And unless a person has actually been convicted of spreading religions other than Islam, you cannot violate their privacy and rights by plastering their face all over the media.

Do what you need to do, but do not go beyond the laws of this nation. Do not overstep the bounds of decency.

    1. Maldivian Law prohibits the conduct of activities of any religion other than Islam.
    2. There is no need to suppress the names and details of people who knowingly violates Maldivian law.
    3. If we want to make things transparent, their names and details should be made public.
    4. If these people were not convicted of their crime, it is because they fled the country or because they were deported before conviction. That does not mean they did not violate the law. That means they were not tried here (only because the left before their trial).

Salaf says they are doing research on this sorts of activities in Maldives so they need the information about these people from the police. I see nothing wrong in what Salaf is doing. I don't think they are going "beyond the laws of this nation." Nor are they overstepping "the bounds of decency."

The Police as far as I think, should give them a reply, irrespective of the content of this reply.

  6. I am wondering if I am following a realigion of truth or is there something that is hidden which is only known to religious guys?

I believe in Allah and his discription is the best I have read so far, what I am saying is, how can a man start to worship an idol or another god who is lesser in qualities in the discription, than Allah?

From the fear I see in the Salaf guys I am qurious to learn the Bible now. As I feel my belief in Islam will never be stronger unless I know other religious teathings. Look At Dr.Zakir Naik,he knows other religions by heart. the result? He understands humans, He loves the creations of Allah, He belives in Allah with out doubts. He lets his children learn other religions and cultures. why? because he knows the truth. May Allah show mercy on the half believers.

I don't believe anyone is afraid of any other faith. As a Muslim society we Muslims are always required to be on the watch to protect the weak elements of our communities from being misguided.

AND it's OUR DUTY. WHY some are so worried when Muslims do their JOB?

    A Perfect example below 😉

    SALIM WAHEED! WATCH THIS 😉
    @Salim Waheed on Fri, 6th Aug 2010 1:45 AM

SALIM! WHAT's YOUR POINT HERE? DO YOU MEAN TO SAY WE STOP DOING OUR JOB? Do you understand what you are spewing here? I believe this is TOO much. HOW beautifully you write articles of deceptions and here YOU ARE attacking an ISLAMIC NGO, when they are doing their JOB. "Hypocrisy" is the what you are practicing. Don't do that and that is a humble advice.

YOU SAID THIS"Jamiyathul Salaf is not an investigative body. It has no authority to proceed with criminal investigations."

THIS IS DECEPTION: This NGO is not investigating they are requesting for information out of their interest on the topic AND that is a lawful right for me, you and for even a ISLAMIC NGO. DID YOU GET IT?

YOU SAID: "And unless a person has actually been convicted of spreading religions other than Islam, you cannot violate their privacy and rights by plastering their face all over the media."

DECEPTION AND TRUTH TWISTING CLEAR HERE: WHO is talking of plastering the faces of these people. ONLY YOU! DON't try to FOOL US WITH YOUR "TWISTED IDEOLOGY"

YOU SAID; "Do what you need to do, but do not go beyond the laws of this nation. Do not overstep the bounds of decency."

SO THEY DID AND THEY ARE DOING. AND YET YOU ARE COMPLAINING? WHAT A SHAME ON YOU. THIS IS NOTHING BUT ISLAMOPHOBIA.
DO WHAT YOU NEED TO DO " CRY OUT LOUD, FOUL, FOUL, FOUL " WE DON'T CARE. BUT LET US ALSO ENJOIN WHAT WE BELIEVE. IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT OUR ULTIMATE LAW IS QURAN & WAY OF LIFE DECIDED TO US BY THE ALMIGHTY GOD, THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOUR VIEWS ARE CORRECT AND WE ARE WRONG. SORRY BUT,FOR US YOUR IDEOLOGY IS " HATEFUL & FOOLISH".

AND you will CRY OUT LOUD " FOUL, FOUL, FOUL" Over my reply... BECAUSE THAT GOES AGAINST YOUR VIEW. YOU ARE MOST WELCOME.

BTW , SORRY IF I HURT ANYONE'S FEELINGS, BUT WE CAN'T JUST KEEP QUITE WHEN WE ARE MARGINALIZED AND MADE SCAPEGOATS OF THE COMMUNITY FOR ALL WRONG ACTIONS WHILE IN TRUTH "EXTREME WESTERNIZATION" IN THE WRONG SENSE HAD CREATED ALL THE PROBLEMS IN OUR SOCIETY
NO! WE WILL DEFEND, NO MATER WHAT , IT'S OUR BASIC RIGHTS AND NO ONE CAN TAKE IT AWAY FROM US. JUST BECAUSE WE ARE PEACEFUL THAT DOESN'T MEAN WE ARE WEAK 😉

Just don't come in to social sphere is my advice. Salaf should deal with other "Salafs" coming to spread their "salafism" in this case Christianity.

  9. I agree that missionary activities are not conducive in the Maldives. However, to consider it a punishable crime seems extreme. If rightly caught carrying out missionary work then yes the person or persons are required to leave. But why such fear, we saw what happened to just one Maldivian who questioned his faith, I don't think that will happen again whether its for the best, who really knows.

Yes, You are very correct. We should read and understand other religious scriptures and before doing that WE SHOULD READ AND UNDERSTAND THE GLORIOUS QURAN (Not just to reading it, but with translations if we don't know Arabic), AND Sahih Hadhiths (Authentic sayings and Actions of Prophet Mohamed (S.A.W) ,science of collection of Authentic Hadhiths & Sunna (Practices) of the Prophet Mohamed(S.A.W).

AND we should understand the teachings, scientific evidences, social, political and economic principles set forth by Almighty GOD (Allah) in the Glorious Quran to the humanity as a whole.

IF people are just blindly following their whims and worldly desires without knowing their own "maker's" (Almighty Creator) instructions it's their fault. For that in Quran WE (All Humans, Muslims specifically) are advised by Almighty GOD in Sura Al-Asr Chpter 103 - (TIME THROUGH THE AGES)-Quran-:1.By (the Token of) Time (through the ages),2.Verily Man is in loss,3.Except such as have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and (join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth, and of Patience and Constancy.

These foreigners, they are NOT deported. Their passport does not have a deported seal!

Jammiyatul Salaf should report this case to Anti-Corruption Commission of Maldives, please!

The government does such favors expecting them not to return but the government does not know how focused and paid they are!

FOR your kind information: There are lots of Muslim Countries where Non-Muslims live happily ( I'm not saying that is perfect), & There are lot of Non-Muslim Countries where Muslims are living happily as well ( There as well not fully perfect).

  24. Bismuth, don't let your ideals oppress others. Don't let yourself overrule the verdicts laid down in the quran.

If you do, your religion will fall. Even the once-mighty Catholic church suffered the Judgment of Fate when it overreached itself and oppressed others. Learn from the mistakes of your predecessors.

    And last but not least...

When hormone-drenched braggarts like "heck" "defend" islam, it's clear that islam's credibility is going to be pretty much doomed.

Thanks for the advice. Honestly,I believe you can follow the same advice for yourself as well.

And I hope you will learn from your own mistakes and refrain from abusing ISLAM/MUSLIMS in a generalized manner out of beliefs from ISLAMOPHOBIANS.

I don't see any difference when you are abusing Heck at the same comment where you are advising me. Anyway that's ok, we make mistakes all the time.

Humans will be always in error, but it doesn't mean we stay on that path forever.

"But we will not hesitate to counter any abusive approaches on us as well"

No my dear,Credibility on Islam will not be doomed from what I do or what anyone else does. Islam will be forever protected and spreading throughout the Globe with or without us and it's destined that way by Almighty GOD.

Now if you may excuse me, I have a celebration to enjoy with the end of "Inthigaali" period. I believe that is a topic we both are on common terms. So why are we at each other on this. What we do not agree can be left aside and we can be united in those things we are for.

Btw nothing personal with you or anyone else when I replied to your comment or their comments. 😉

May Almighty GOD bless us all with Truth ,Peace and Justice.

  27. Hi,

Excess of anything, whatever it may be, is BAD. Anything in excess has its equal and opposite reaction. This is applicable to all countries, societies, religion etc. All religions are decades & decades old. Some of the practices followed then are not practical now. May be they were relevant in that era but this is modern, hi-tech time. Today we need educated Preachers who could tell us what practices we should discard and what practices we should continue to follow.
'Religion' is not relevant as it change be changed and further changed. It is faith which matters. Long, long time back, it was Vedic, then came idol worshiping, then came Buddhism, Zoroastrian, Islam, Christianity etc. Till date, billions of people must have had converted from one religion to another for various reasons - wealth, title, woman etc. The 'form' changed but not the 'belief'. No one and no body can change the Belief or faith in GOD. Motto should be "Believe and let Believe". (Samir).

  28. Just look at you guys! Pathetic.

This is the Maldives, where we have a closely knit community. We need that bond. We have to treasure it. Instead we are bickering about who is the best, which religion everybody else must follow...

I am a Maldivian and regardless of what i believe, there is no way anybody can evict me from here. I for one want peace, and I dont care what religion or any fancy thoughts that you (or any of my neighbours) entertain when they have xxx.

You all have to understand law of averages. There would be % colorblind, % cancer patients, % sexual deviants, %down syndrome, % below ave intelligence, etc, in any community. Not all would have the ability to understand your level of religious reasoning, and combined with their upbringing, they could tend towards any religion (or not). SO WHAT? As far as you intelligent guys are concerned you are on the right path, and will reach heaven faster than any other. You win in any case.

Grow up man. In all religions, if you want to go to heaven, you have to earn it yourself. Dont drag your friends or neighbours in to it. You guys are paranoid about christianity. WTF.

  29. @Who needs an enemy? on Mon, 9th Aug 2010 9:24 PM

This is earth and we are humans first. For humanity we need peace and unity for morally and ethically good causes. AND only way for that is to be united in one single fundamental truth.
{That is: GOD is one, unique, absolute and and eternal,He has no beginning nor an end and there is nothing like him [we humans can compare with]- Which is also known as Purity of faith)

How can we ignore others and their wrongs if we want such elusive peace and unity that we have been wanting for so long?

You have exactly done the same. You are worried, concerned and wants others to follow your way of life. "Care free" way of life as you have portrayed yourself in the comment. AND that is not practical. Why? If you read this to the end you'll know why.

No one wants enemies. Everyone wants peace and unity to progress in their life but it is also true Evil exist. The evil components need peace and unity amongst themselves: example Mafia Gangs, Nazism, Zionism,Satanism, etc was and is still coordinated and united. The local evils such we are facing today (corruption, hypocrisy, and all anti-social activities) are all coordinated and united Groups of people working for their interest and freedom from their perceived enemies(all those who wants to forbid wrong and enjoin all that is good).

For the evil elements all their evil acts are good as that is their happiness and joy. Evil exist and it will flourish if the real good elements chose to just ignore it. That is the reason everyone is worried and goes on to express their views and concerns.

Can I ask you same questions you have asked all others. Why are you worried with us expressing our views? Why don't you follow your care free approach and just leave us "bicker" at each other?

You said this " I dont care what religion or any fancy thoughts that you (or any of my neighbours) entertain when they have xxx."

You also said this; "Grow up man. In all religions, if you want to go to heaven, you have to earn it yourself. Dont drag your friends or neighbours in to it. You guys are paranoid about christianity. WTF."

It is quite obvious that you have a paranoia towards religions and a little bit of favoritism towards another group. In simple English your worry is about religions other than what you like. For some people that is not a simple issue and they will not even agree with you as "bickering" when they passionately express their views,in defensive against abuses towards their way of life.

Likewise for a drug dealer it would be abusive when police goes and handcuffs him and confiscating all his millions of money that was discovered under his mattress. Do you mean to say Police needs to stop doing that and just lavishly sit at their offices with "care free" approach? I don't think that you will approve that with a "Fine for me" comment.

As for ISLAM, It is "a way of life" for about 1.8 billion people and still majority of those who identifies amongst Muslims,at least they try to practice their way of life unlike most other groups of people identifying with other religions. ISLAM is not simply a "religion" as you are characterizing. Therefore for them (Including me) it will be more than "bickering" to get worried when some are openly and ridiculously defaming their(including me) way of life just as you are worried with your way of care free approach being not respected by most of us.

In conclusion I would like to advice you that your arguments are logical fallacy and not practical to this practical world that we are living in. Humans will be in arguments or in disagreement no matter how closely they are bonded. Otherwise there wouldn't be disagreements at micro levels as in families. God created us and he knows us best and had advised us (in Quran) how to deal with such situations. In short that is to find common terms when in disagreements and not to despise each other but to wish for the other what we wish for ourselves.

AND also I would advice you to stop using foul language while expressing your views, if you are really honest and truthful.

    Allah Knows Best.

May Allah bless us with peace and prosperity and unite us in Truth.

First : I apologize for the use of some inappropriate words.

Second : You misunderstood me. I care. I care about my country. I care about peace and future of my country. That is why I want progress unhindered, and frankly i feel the country would be better without mullah's.

My vision may differ from yours. Probably would. I want a better education system, Health facilities, stronger economy, social harmony; In other words prosperity. However, I feel that (i may be wrong) obsessive commitment and dedication to some religious sermons and activities (apart from the basic rules) do hinder progress.

Unlike the richer arab countries we have to work hard even for a semblance of progress. I don't (under any circumstance) wish Maldives to end up like Afghan. Maybe I am low IQ, but I wish my country progress towards the likes of west, S'pore, S korea, etc. I know the greatness of our religion, but my take on it is, it has to be practical and I should see and feel it. A big part of the mullah's sayings are good and I can relate to the good. The problem is that the bickering (whether you accept it or not) even among the informed/educated sometimes are over trivial matters and waste of energy, time. Most times it hinders progress. Just to let you know one recent incident: Two "i know best" mullahs were arguing whether it's halal beef if they stun the animal before slaughtering. It got to the stage of nearly manhandling each (if they had a sharp tool, i would have led to serious injuries) other over that. This is just one of hundreds. Some say photos are as bad as kissing dogs, some says TV must be banned. My parents are fasting almost every day, because some bearded mullahs preached, (ironically, over TV) that apart from Sunday, fasting on all other days would guarantee heaven. And this is not even Ramazan yet. Even doctors now cannot convince my parents that it will lead to health problems.

So, I fully appreciate you may have different vision. But Maldives is our country as well. I, for one, would be against any activity which will apply breaks for any progress. Religious or not. And right now, political instability is my main concern.
