Man dies following Fuvamulah motorcycle accident

A 28 year-old man injured in collision between two motorbikes on Fuvamulah in Gnaviyani Atoll has died.

The police identified the man as Mohamed Shujau of Atha house.

According to police the accident occurred last night at around 8:25 pm on Mohamed Jamaluddeen Naibu Thuthu Road. Shujau received serious injuries to his head, nose and face.

Police said the other motorbike involved in the accident was driven by two minors, one of whom was admitted to Fuvamulak Hospital ICU and later brought Male’ for further treatment.

New police station on Landhoo in Noonu Atoll destroyed in fire

Police have said a new police station built on the island of Landhoo in Noonu Atoll has burned down.

In a statement police said the station was set ablaze at about 2:00am this morning, with the entire building destroyed beyond repair.

Police said the fire was controlled in 20 minutes with the help of islanders.

According to police, the building was built using the money of islanders.

Manadhoo island police station is now investigating the case.

Maldives police contemplate stationing officers in Sri Lanka, India

Police Commissioner Abdulla Riyaz has revealed plans are being discussed to station Maldivian officers in Sri Lanka and India from next year as part of efforts to curb the trafficking of illicit drugs into the country.

In an interview with Haveeru, Commissioner Riyaz said that considering the suspected heavy involvement of foreigners smuggling drugs into the Maldives, officers from the country may need to be based at Maldivian embassies in several neighbouring countries to try and curb the illegal trade.

Riyaz also spoke of the need to introduce rehabilitation programs in the country’s prisons.

Maldives Development Alliance to hold coalition talks

The Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) headed by local MP and business tycoon Ahmed ‘Sun Travel’ Shiyam is reportedly looking to form a coalition with which to contest the presidential election scheduled for next month.

MDA national council members present at a meeting held on Thursday (August 1) unanimously approved the decision to form a coalition, with an unnamed party official telling Shiyam’s Sun Online news service that the power-sharing talks were thought to involve the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

According to local media, a five-member committee has already been formed to discuss forming a coalition with the PPM, which is presently standing by itself with Parliamentary Group Leader MP Adulla Yameen as presidential candidate.

PPM vice presidential candidate Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed and Spokesperson MP Ahmed Nihan were not responding to requests to clarify the report at time of press.

Parliament approves Azima Shukoor as Attorney General

Attorney General Azima Shukoor has had her appointment approved by parliament 38 votes in favour to 31 against.

Shukoor, who formerly acted as lawyer for former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, was initially appointed Attorney General by President Mohamed Waheed when he came to power in February 2012.

She was later reassigned to the Ministry of Family, Gender and Human Rights, however her appointment to this role was narrowly rejected by parliament.

President Waheed subsequently appointed her to her former position as Attorney General.

Government meets with senior mediation advisor of UN Department of Political Affairs

The United Nations Department of Political Affairs’ Senior Mediation Advisor Dr Antje Herrberg has met with government officials in Male’ today to discuss the country’s upcoming presidential election.

Dr Herrberg met with senior government officials this morning to hear about efforts to ensure polling scheduled for September 7 was both free and fair, the President’s Office has confirmed.

President Dr Mohamed Waheed said his government would work to maintain peace and stability in the country leading up to the election, while the UN pledged its assistance to try and ensure voting was free and fair.

President Waheed meets WHO deputy regional director for South East Asia

President Dr Mohamed Waheed has met with World Health Organisation (WHO) South East Asian Regional Office (SEARO) Deputy Regional Director Dr Poonam Khetrapal in Male’ yesterday (July 29).

Dr Khetrapal spoke during the meeting on measures presently being undertaken to develop and strengthen the health sector of the Maldives, according to the President’s Office website.

Police charge nine men and two minors in connection with May stabbing

Police have concluded an investigation into a case involving a young man attacked with sharp weapons in May, and have sent the names of nine men and two minors to the Prosecutor General (PG)’s office for prosecution.

Police identified the nine men as Anas Hussein, 19 of Hinnavaru in Lhaviyani Atoll, Midhath Ibrahim, 18, of Dhevvadhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, Mohamed Fareed, 18 of Male’, Hanif Imthiyaz, 18 of Baarah in Haa Alifu Atoll, Shifan Jameel, 20 of Villingili in Gaafu Alifu Atoll, Ahmed Mafaz, 26 of Addu City, Abdulla Naasihu, 18 of Kondey in Gaafu Alifu Atoll, Abdul Muhaimin Ahmed, 20 of Rathafandhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll and Nafeel Abdul Gadhir, 27 of Dhaandhoo in Gaafu Alifu Atoll.

Police said the nine persons stormed into a shop on Hithahfiniva Magu in the Henveiru ward of Male and assaulted a young man inside the shop on May 19 at about 6:20pm.

The investigation into the case was concluded on July 21 and was sent to the PG the same day, police stated.

The local media reports said the young man had run into the shop to escape from a group that was trying to attack him, and was hiding behind the counter when the group entered.

The victim was stabbed two places, local media reported.

President Waheed forms Small and Medium Enterprises Council

President Dr Mohamed Waheed has this week announced the establishment of a Small and Medium Enterprises Council, as well as appointing members to oversee the body’s work.

The President’s Office stated yesterday that 14 members had been appointed to the council, representing both government ministries and several industries across the country.
