MNDF assists with relocation of Maafilaafushi island residents

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has today continued with efforts to relocate families on the island of Maafilaafushi in Lhaviyani Atoll, local media has reported.

MNDF officers began assisting with the transfer of families to the island of Naifaru yesterday (July 10) at the request of Lhaviyani Atoll Council.

MNDF officials have told Sun Online that the ongoing transfer of the estimated 80 people living on Maafilaafushi was expected to continue on Saturday (July 13).  The military also thanked islanders for their cooperation.

Local media has reported that the decision to transfer residents to nearby islands in Lhaviyani Atoll had been taken after the government declared Maafilaafushi an inhabited island.

The office of Lhaviyani Atoll Council and MNDF Media Officer Captain Abdulla Ali were not responding to calls from Minivan News at time of press.

In 2011, the former government began discussions on transferring the population of Maafilaafushi – then estimated at around 100 residents – to other islands.

Local Newspaper Haveeru reported at the time that residents on Maafilaafushi, which was used by the MNDF for training, had demanded to be relocated due to military exercises conducted on the island.

Judge refuses to officiate MDP-themed wedding

A judge from Kanduhulhudhoo Island in Gaaf Alif Atoll has refused to officiate a wedding decorated with the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s presidential campaign slogan ‘MDP Ehburun’ last week, reports local media.

‘Ehburun’ (one round) is a reference to the MDP’s pledge to win the September 7 presidential election in the first round.

The Kanduhulhudhoo Magistrate Judge Hassan Didi refused to proceed with the marriage vows because the table set for the marriage ceremony was “decorated with the words ‘MDP EhBurun’ in bold letters,” according to CNM.

“I refused to officiate because ‘MDP EhBurun’ was written. I do not object to the color or arrangements used for decoration. But we cannot conduct a wedding to promote a certain group,” Didi told CNM.

“I told them that it would be better to have a phrase such as ‘Baajjaveri Kaivenyakah Maruhaba’ (‘Welcome To A Happy Wedding’),” he added.

The families of the couple then changed the table decorations, before the judge would proceed with the wedding, Didi explained.

Maldives appeals to Sri Lanka for food security

Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim has appealed to the Sri Lankan government for assistance with agriculture and food security, the office of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said.

In a statement, the Sri Lankan government said “Nazim described to the President some of the hardships experienced by the Maldivian population due to inadequate supplies and high prices of some agricultural products such as rice and certain vegetables. Nazim also indicated that, given the good bilateral ties between the two countries, it might be useful to conduct exchange programs for Maldivian agriculturalists to learn from Sri Lankan experts.”

According to the statement, President Rajapaksa indicated that “Sri Lanka may be able to assist Maldives meet their rice requirement”, but “also urged the Maldivian government to encourage the people to engage in home gardening that could help families address their individual food needs.”

Particles found in Baxter International IV solutions: MFDA

A warning against using the use of intravenous solutions made by the US pharmaceutical company Baxter International has been issued by the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) today (July 10), reports local media.

Particles inside IV bottles were found by the MFDA on three occasions, which could mean the standard of the IV solutions could be compromised and potentially harm patients, said the MFDA alert.

The MFDA has urged vigilance and that all IV solutions be returned to the authority. They are “looking into the matter” as well as inspecting the warehouses where the IV bottles are stored.

Kenyan woman and Maldivian to be charged for defrauding MVR 98,000 from Hinnavaru Island

Police have sent the names of a Kenyan woman and a Maldivian man to the Prosecutor General’s Office for allegedly defrauding MVR 98,000 from people of Hinnavaru in Lhaviyani Atoll, by luring them to participate in a course not accredited by the Maldives Qualification Authority (MQA).

Police identified the two as Jasintha Soyokva, 35 from Kenya and Ibrahim Riyaz, 35 of Raspary house in Kandoodhoo, Thaa Atoll.

According to police, the pair conducted an Office and Administration course on the island and told the participants that the certificate they received upon completion of the course was accredited by the MQA and 28 persons participated in the course.

JSC Committee investigating Supreme Court Justice’s sex tape meets with police

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC)’s committee investigating the alleged sex tape of Supreme Court Justice Ali Hameed yesterday met with police.

The local media reported that police and JSC had not provided any details of the meeting.

A committee consisting of JSC Vice Chair Abdulla Didi, commission members Latheefa Gasim, Ahmed Rasheed and two other persons outside the JSC was composed last week to look in to a case involving video footage of Supreme Court Justice Ali Hameed allegedly having sex outside marriage, after the police formally notified the JSC.

A second video also surfaced on social media networks apparently depicting Hameed and a local businessman discussing political influence in the judiciary. Local media identified the businessman as Mohamed Saeed, the director of local business firm ‘Golden Lane’.

Justice Hameed in the video also goes on to reveal his political ‘hook-up’ with Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom – the current Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) presidential candidate – claiming that he was one of Yameen’s “back-ups” and that his stand was “to do things the way Yameen wants”.

After the video footage surfaced in the media and social network, the police have summoned Justice Hameed twice to reportedly query about the issue.

Both police and JSC are remaining silent on the matter and have not provided details of the investigations to the local media.

President appoints Aishath Bisam as Home Minister, Dr Amal Ali as Gender Minister

Former Attorney General Aishath Bisam has been appointed Home Minister by President Mohamed Waheed, while Dr Amal Ali has been appointed Gender Minister.

Waheed’s earlier appointment of Bisam as Attorney General and Azima Shukoor as Gender Minister were recently narrowly rejected by parliament, which is required to give a majority vote of confidence in each minister appointed to the executive.

After her dismissal as Gender Minister Shukoor was appointed Attorney General, returning to a post she had occupied at the start of Waheed’s administration.

Former Home Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel was dismissed from the cabinet by President Waheed after he joined the Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) as running mate to half-brother of former President Gayoom, Abdulla Yameen.

Bisam, Amal and Shukoor will now require majority votes in parliament to remain in their new positions.

Parliament agrees extension of STELCO overdraft guarantee with BML

Parliament has today agreed to extend a government guarantee on a MVR 50 million (US$ 3.2 million) overdraft facility with Bank of Maldives (BML) for the State Electric Company (STELCO) until March 2014, according to local media.

The extension was passed with 31 votes in favour to 17 against, Sun Online has reported.
A total of 48 MPs took part in today’s vote.

The overdraft guarantee, which had originally been approved through parliament in September 2009, had been sent to expire this year.

Despite the extension agreement, STELCO last month revealed that the government owed MVR 543 million (US$35.2 million) in unpaid electricity bills as of May 2013.

According to the company, most of the money (MVR 281 million/US$18.2 million) is owed by assorted government offices. Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) owes MVR 37 million (US$2.4 million) and the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) owes MVR 224 (US$14.5 million).

STELCO, which is wholly owned by the government, is the country’s sole provider of electricity to major urban centres, such as Male’, and many inhabited islands.

Adhaalath Party brings 34 hafiz for Ramazan prayers

The Adhaalath Party (AP) has arranged for 38 hafiz, individuals who can recite the Quran from memory, to lead tarawih (night prayer) throughout the atolls during Ramazan, reports local media.

The hafiz will be sent to islands by the first day of Ramazan (July 9) and AP is currently coordinating with island councils and associations to determine which islands they will be assigned, said Adhaalath.

This is the fifth year the AP has brought hafiz under its social responsibility program, with 34 arriving from India and four from Sri Lanka.
