Ousted President Mohamed Nasheed launched his campaign for the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) presidential primary, on the island of Magoodhoo in Faafu Atoll on Sunday.
Nasheed alleges he was deposed in a coup d’état on February 7 and has called for early elections within 2012. The Commonwealth and the EU have supported the call. However, new President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan has said the earliest constitutionally-permitted date for elections was July 2013.
The MDP presidential primary is to be held on June 15. Nasheed is presently the MDP’s sole candidate, but has to win 10 percent of votes in order to gain the MDP candidacy.
Speaking to Magoodhoo residents, Nasheed emphasised the importance of an elected government claiming the chances of a 2013 election were slim if an election could not be held in 2012.
“When a government is elected through a vote, it fosters a close relationship between the people and their leaders. Such a government will benefit the people, it will fulfill the needs of the people. Because the government originates from the people,” Nasheed said.
“No earthly power, not even that of the police or military, can equal the power of the people. When an individual finds courage in another, and the people come out to enforce their will, no one can challenge that will. Not even the police, the military or judges,” he added.
President Waheed’s administration was established by force, Nasheed claimed, and was prioritising the approval of the police and military over that of service delivery.
“The current administration will prioritise getting the approval of the police and military. The government treasury, the government’s expenditure, will not be spent on the people. They will have to end Aasandha, dismiss the utility companies, abolish the health corporations. They will have to stop the transport network,” he said.
President Waheed has repealed many of Nasheed’s policies, including the abolition of regional health and utility corporations, reviewing the free universal healthcare scheme Aasandha, ending the second chance program for rehabilitation of inmates, and halting all public-private-partnership development projects claiming the contracts’ legality needed to be reviewed.
The coalition of political parties backing Waheed have accused Nasheed of corruption in the awarding of development contracts.
Waheed had also decided to accept resort islands’ lease extension payments in installments rather than upfront at the end of the lease. The MDP has alleged the move will immediately take US$135 million out of state coffers.
“They did not make any promises, hence, they have no way to fulfill promises,” Nasheed said regarding Waheed’s policies.
Nasheed campaigned on a platform of development, pledging to continue installing water and sewerage systems, development of harbors and improving education, utility and health services at island level through public-private-partnerships.
The policy would “award an island for resort development to companies who develop water and sewerage system in an inhabited island,” Nasheed said.
“I cannot understand why we should hoard Maldives’ resources when Maldivian citizens do not get the services they need. Magoodhoo does not have a proper sewerage system or potable water. Magoodhoo does not have a harbor. But Magoodhoo has two to three islands in its lagoon. I do not understand why we let these islands be left untouched for Valla [sea bird] to lay eggs on in the belief they are invaluable natural resources,” he added.
The MDP administration had allocated 150 islands to lease out to companies on the condition of carrying out development work in the atolls of the Maldives.
Nasheed urged all MDP members to vote in the party’s primary.
“I assure you I will not take undue benefits from your vote. I pledge to fulfill the party’s promises to you. I assure you I will not steal a single laari of your money,” Nasheed said.
“We have a vision, a picture, a hope, a dream, a thought to change this island. MDP knows what must be done to gain development,” he added.
During his visit, Nasheed also visited the islands of Kudhahuvadhoo, Meedhoo, Bilehdhoo and Feeali. He lay foundations for MDP offices in Meedhoo and Biledhoo.
Nasheed is too effeminate and irreligious to make a suitable leader for our nation.
There is a hadith that narrates to us that when the Messenger of Allaah (peace andblessings of Allaah be upon him) heard that the people of Persia had appointed the daughter of Chosroes as their queen, he said, "No people will ever prosper who appoint a woman in charge of them".
When we consider this further, we can extrapolate that the man with feminine charesteristics or subject to excessive influence by females will also steer us towards unwise ends - for women are not wise. They are also subject to distracting bodily functions unique to their gender which further exacerbates their mental deficiencies.
Granted, Nasheed will not menstruate - but many of his chosen affiliates and advisors will. Furthermore, he is irreligious and that is unacceptable.
For leaders we must look to the Ulammah and chose from among them one that is learned, masculine and strong, both in mental acuity and physical presence.
Exalted be our creator, who has given me great wisdom.
In any case, we, as citizens of the Maldives, have had enough of demo-crazy. Enough of its chaos and cacaphony. The melody and peace of Islam and shar’ia is all that we desire!
Only then will we be able to salvage some virtue from our harlot women, and discipline them as we see fit!
@Dhivehi Haguraama
Prophet Muhaamadh Peace Be Upon Him said no muslim should accuse another of not being a muslim. That no one knows what is in the heart of another. I ask you to respect our Prophets teachings and respect Islam.
Islam also assigns women the highest honour and gives women the freedom to do business, toown propoerty, to work , to partner their husbands in business, in politics and in the community.
We only have to look at the lives of Khadheeja and Aisha beloved wives of Prophet Muhammadh Peace Be Upon Him to see the position of women in Islam.
Please be respectful of other people and of Islam when you write these comments.
Indeed Islam accords women the highest of honour, yet the bulk of them do not display gratitude or proper virtue. Most of our harlots do not even veil themselves.
Their competence is suspect, and allowing them to partake in the activities you speak of is best done with male guidance and oversight.
____
Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:
Once Allah’s Apostle went out to the Musalla (to offer the prayer) o ‘Id-al-Adha or Al-Fitr prayer. Then he passed by the women and said, “O women! Give alms, as I have seen that the majority of the dwellers of Hell-fire were you (women).”
They asked, “Why is it so, O Allah’s Apostle ?”
He replied, “You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion than you. A cautious sensible man could be led astray by some of you.”
The women asked, “O Allah’s Apostle! What is deficient in our intelligence and religion?”
He said, “Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man?” They replied in the affirmative. He said, “This is the deficiency in her intelligence. Isn’t it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?” The women replied in the affirmative. He said, “This is the deficiency in her religion.”
- Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 6, Number 301 -
Furthermore, do not twist my words. I said Nasheed was irreligious, not that he was not a Muslim. That is between him and his creator, exalted be he.
Though I find Nasheed to be a most detestable man.

No one seems interested in Nasheed's campaign. So I will also let you guys know what I think of DH
DH you do nothing but disrespect Islam and make people hate the religion by distorting what it preaches.
Religion has nothing to do with politics - conservative hidden forces misuse religion and the name of Allha to suppress the people.
Even the two highest Muslim leaders in Maldives have said that the coup d'etat is strongly against Islam and fully HARAM.
Religion is an individual expression of faith - the mullahs and sheikhs do not speak on behalf of Allah - though the act like whether they have His mobile number at hand.
In the name of religion people in Maldives are kept dumb and gagged. See what all stories dictator Maumoon, Thasmeen, Gazim, Umar, PPM, DRP, DQP, Adalaath have been making in the name of Allah and religion : destroyed museum, the statues of SAARC, the 'Indians' of GMR, the withdraw of GST, the closing of saunas, doing biz with Israel, all foreigners are missionaries, and on and on.
Nothing of all that shit talks is there anymore. No problem to work with foreigners of GMR, no problem to bribe Indians for support, no problem whatever.
More than that, the most important "adviser" of the dictators coup is now a Jew, who considers Islam as a danger for the West and who does not mind to promote the Fitna movie from Holland Muslim hater Geert Wilders.
There is no better way to see the truth, behind the coup, behind the misuse of religion as looking on those facts.
Maumoon gets support only from people who are kept low-educated and underdeveloped, because only in such places and with such people those kind of dirty politics can be played.
Dictator and his coup people are thieves of our tax money, which they use to reward the police and put in their own pockets. For them the common people of Maldives should remain dumb(cut education), poor (cut development of islands) and not in good health (cut health insurance0.
Not with me, not with my children : I want them to have a real future instead of living under a dictatorship and some rich people who live their lavish life with our money.
@Rania
No one is interested in DH either. Just ignore him. He and his stupid BonnAqua shaikhs can continue to call themselves 'great scholars' and call to do violence against all who disagrees with them while calling women 'deficient in intelligence' or w/e. He is an idiot.
Just stay away from the stupid shaikhs. Keep our kids away from them too. You will be fine.
@DH
Last time I will adress you because honestly you are too low of a level person to spend too much time talking to:
YOU'RE AND ALL YOUR SHAIKH FRIENDS ARE REAL *****in** PIECES OF *****.
Whew that felt good. 🙂
@DH
Wow! Is that all you could find in the Quraan and the Hadhees about us women?
Very selective screening, my dear.Good grief, you do seem to have deep rooted issues about women. Or is it just a game you are playing?
I agree with Rania. Nothing you say really inspires. You cannot touch the heart of any human being by telling the person how deficient he/she is. We are all born sons and daughters of Allah, born with His blessings, to be whoever we want, achieve whatever we want, be whatever we want.
Your view of Islam undermines this great religion and seeks to incite rather than provide harmony, fragment rather than unite, undermine rather than exalt.
Please respect our religion.
As for your attempt to be semantic, let me tell you that by the constitution of the Maldives we are all muslims, so when you accuse someone of being irreligious, you are saying he/she is not practising Islam. Well, to me atleast. Perhaps my English is not as good as yours.
I request that you refrain from such accusations. As you correctly said, who we are as muslims is between us and Allah and it is not for other human beings to judge us. We are and will be judged by Allah and we face His wrath when we stray.... every moment, in this life,and in the other life.
We need Aalimun to be our guides. Sadly, we seem to have only wannabe Aalimun in the Maldives. That, my dear, is the source of all our troubles.
@Khadheeja
"We are all born sons and daughters of Allah"
That is shirk!
@Khadeeja
"I agree with Rania. Nothing you say really inspires. You cannot touch the heart of any human being by telling the person how deficient he/she is. We are all born sons and daughters of Allah, born with His blessings, to be whoever we want, achieve whatever we want, be whatever we want."
I understand that you are upset but please do not say things like we are "sons and daughters of Allah".
That is something Christians say of the prophet Eesa (pbuh) and, as a Muslim, you should know that it isa very dangerous blasphemy. It is unforgivable if meant sincerely.
If it was not intentional, please do not do it again. Though I still condemn Minivannews for publishing such an outrageous comment. Or at least for publishing it without editing out the aforementioned part.
"... dismiss the utility companies, abolish the health corporations...", so says Nasheed eh?
Well, well, would Mr Nasheed explain to us in plain Dhivehi, the benefits that these august institutions brought to our people?
I did not notice any. In fact, what I noticed were spiralling costs and degraded quality of services. The health corporations were monstrosities manned by incompetent party loyalists with little regard to their responsibilities. The utility companies were a similar fiasco.
In summary, these were some of the blunders of the Nasheed administration. Nasheed wanted to privatise utility and health services. When he realised he couldn't do that, he created these half baked "corporations" which were nothing but hugely inefficient government departments!
Nasheed, we don't need such initiatives, thank you very much. If you hope to get elected to the highest office again (cat in hell's chance, in my opinion), you had better come up with better policies.
DH
Since the beginning of Islamic relgion people like you made futile attempts to discredit the religion. But to your frustration, the religion kept on spreading world wide. LOL
Keep wasting your time writing distorted nonsense. In the end you will be old and tired and one day, like any other human being, you will have to die answer your creator, Allah and be accountable for what you did. LOL
"I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing;
in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband,
and he shall rule over you.[Genesis. 3:16]" this verse is from the distorted bible. and they dare call us Muslims oppressors of women rights.. Islam values women to their highest degree. Narrated Abu Hurairah: A man came to Allah's Messenger and said, "Who is more entitled to be treated with the best companionship by me?" The Prophet said, "Your mother." The man said. "Who is next?" The Prophet said, "Your mother." The man further said, "Who is next?" The Prophet said, "Your mother." The man asked for the fourth time, "Who is next?" The Prophet said, "Your father."
Sahih al-Bukhari, 8:2. now who values women more.
"None but a noble man treats women in an honourable manner. And none but an ignoble treats women
disgracefully" At-Tirmithy
Doesn't it say it all?
Now Magoodhoo needs a harbour?! I thought u said 'bandhareh tharagee kurumuge kurin ehah meehaa tharageevey. Bandhare alhaigen konkameh mirashu meehun kuraanee.' (Feb 2011)
What's changed that Magoodhoo needs a harbour again? First u insult them with ur Male' supremacist chiding now u want to string them along in ur reality distortion field. What a way to treat a bunch of ppl who seem geniunely devoted to u.
And as for the our so called "rulers" Both MDP & Ithihaad. "He who has been a ruler over ten people will be brought shackled on the Day of Resurrection, until the justice (by which he ruled) loosens his chains or tyranny brings him to destruction."
Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 1037
of all of us you guys have the highest probability of going Hell......
"Male’ supremacist" hehe thats a nice term...
LOL Why is he campaigning when hes the only person running for presidential primacy in MDP? So much for the 'democratic' party eh?
in my opinion, Nahseed the dictator may not have much chances to win the next election. But we can not remove dictator from the equation completely since he has robbed huge amount of money during last three years and they will buy the vote from poor Maldivian.
Thanks Aobilz, coming from a very Male' family I'm sick of these fascists too
What I meant to say was that we are all creations of Allah, all children of Allah. Is it shirk to say that as well?
@ Mode
I think you made a few typos there, Mode. You must have been referring to Gayoom not Nasheed, and its not three years, its 30 years. Gayoom robbed us for thirty years and used the money he took from us poor people to pay for our votes.
You have to hand it to Gayoom. There must be very few dictators out there who have Gayooms capacity for fraud, theft, lies, tyranny, and murder.
@aa
It is being democratic, aa. He has to get atleast 10 % of our vote to qualify to run for Presidency on the MDP ticket.
I meant to say we are creations of Allah, children of Allah, is that shirk as well?
I have never read the Bible,so
forgive my ignorance.
@Bismuth: Khadeeja says Sons and Daughters of Allah. The term Son of Allah was used in 'Kitab-Al-Zabur' (Book of Psalms) to imply the Power and Glory of King David (Nabi Dawood.) It was a title given to King's, was not meant to be understood literally. It is called anthropomorphic metaphor. In this sense, Khadeeja's expression is decribing all people as King's and Queen's, a beautiful, humanitarian sentiment. The language elevates the dignity of All, which is in conformity with the deeply egalitarian essence of Islam. I doubt she meant it literally.
Yes Christians may have misused this expression as their thinking was influenced through Greek thought. The development of Christian dogma was possibly an attempt to interpret Semitic metaphor through Greek literalism.
However, if we take the Qur'anic regulations and apply it way out of context, without trying to understand its essence and meaning, to the point we deprive one another of the freedom to use creative metaphor, we are also doing an injustice to the liberating essence of the religion.
Did you ever attempt to understand why the Qur'an forbids referring to people as Sons and Daughters of God. This is only a theory I propose to you. I propose it because, my interest here is in trying to avoid the onslaught of literalism. My idea is that, the Islamic religion has a deeply egalitarian sentiment, it is meant to enforce the idea that even Kings, even tyrants, are in the end, only Slaves of the Will of Allah, we are all Ibadat (slaves/worshippers) of Allah, even Prophet (SAW) said he is but a Slave of Allah, but this was meant to enhance the dignity of ALL humanity by restoring the spirit of Equity and Justice to a world where tyrants had taken over.
In my opinion, as long as it is understood/meant in this beautiful, metaphorical sense, Khadeeja's language is Islamic.
This is only my idea, I do not claim it as truth. I do not profess to be a scholar of religion. I do not have a monopoly on the exact nature of Spiritual truth. The only thing which I believe is absolute is the sanctity of being, and that this comes from a source greater than a human being, or than human beings. Beyond that, I am a liar if I said I understood it! I only have ideas, I am simply exercising my creative impulse.
You see, when we repress creative thought about the bigger things, we repress the ability to be creative in other areas... I appreciate that you are correcting Khadeeja in pointing out that her language could not be considered correct from a 'literalist' Islamic point of view. If she chooses to refrain from that language because it is not Islamic, that is up to her. Yet if she chooses to use creative metaphor, then what right have you got to claim to be the ultimate authority about the way that the Qur'an is to be read, interpreted, understood, applied!
did that not work?
@ Dhivehi Hanguraama: are the women associated witht eh rpesent government religious?? ooooohh look, these women a veiled right - Azima shukoor, dhiyaana saeed...and the great aneesa??? ...why should you blame everything on Nasheed??? is that what islam taught you to do?? as a muslim, your job appears to be to sit on the internet and make all these useless comments in the name of spreading islam. cut some slack will you?
Who cares the mumbo jumbo about gods.
Anni to president or not. That is the question.
Regardless he follows Muslim or not.
As usual, Maldivians go off the tangent. Anni's presidential campaign derailed on Islam vs. all other relegions.
We were zero % muslims before Abl. Barakath Bar Baree.
We were 150% muslims under Gayyoom. With Anni we went down to 99.99% muslims (all because of this stuipid Nizam vs Dr. Z. Nike).
Now with Dr. Waheed and blessings from Dr. Imran we are doubled up to being 200% muslims.
Please vote for a president who will Sky rocket our percentage on Muslim rating. or how I wish that Maldives have a local Aayathulla as a spiritual leader. Not like Shaheem. It has to be a while long pointed beared and a turben.
Think both Gayyoom and Anni will look terribly odd in the religious groom.
Ayya, I guess thats how yellow party defines 'democracy'. Clearly you dont even have a clue what democracy is. You see, if there was a candidate running against Anni in the presidential primary in MDP, I bet he/she would have been given death threats and forced to leave the party now. That maybe democracy for you but not for the majority of the ordinary citizens. Cheers!!
@Khadeeja.
Having read the exchanges here I would like to share with you another angle to the exchanges here. I think it’s natural that we as human beings strive to understand about our Creator. Humans have been doing so probably since he was able to think. It’s part of his nature.
In this contemplation of his Creator, he has come out with different ways of identifying his Creator. Travel around the world and you will see a million different ways of expressing man’s understanding of God. God is represented among other things as a cow, a man with an elephant’s trunk, as a crow, as a beautiful mother, as a father and the list go on and on. Whilst there are some exotic pic expressions as to who their Creator is some have had just an idea, like those who saw the Creator as that person who has no Anus. ( May Allah Bless Brother Deedat)
From an Islamic perspective this is understandable, because man was created with an inherent inclination towards his Creator. We are taught that subsequently his education in the form of his parents, teachers, and society corrupts the original pristine yearning and natural inclination towards his/her Creator.
This is where the Mercy of Man’s Creator comes to play. He provides man with vital information. The mode of communication that Man’s Creator chose was sending Messengers to put right the before said million and one different ways of expressing man’s understanding about God. We learn that throughout human history over 124,000 of these Messengers with Criteria to distinguish right and wrong ideas about the Creator was sent to us. Can you imagine the Mercy that sends such Messengers to every nation?
It’s a fascinating story of love and striving and not surprisingly we are taught by the very last of these prophets that the Creators inclination to us humans - his creatures are tens of times greater than the love of a mother. When you go to a planetarium anywhere in the world or just go to the beach on a clear night and gaze into the sky; you will be struck down by how lonely we human beings and this earth is in this vast cosmos. Then when you remember the Message from your Creator given to be given to us – the Koran, by his final Messenger saying that your Creator has indeed not forgotten us but that He is closer to us than our neck veins, you are overcome with Gratefulness, Love and tears of Gratefulness wets ones cheeks. Try it!
This same Koran tells us that Our Creator is The All Living, The All Hearing, The all Seeing, The All Just. We are listed 99 beautiful names and attributes and learn that even all the Oceans were pots of ink and the trees turned into pens we cannot express the beauty and perfection of our Creator.
Thus Man tried a 1 million ways to depict his Creator – Cow, Giant, Crow, Father, Mother, Son, Daughter etc. The effort ended in A Million mistakes. How do we know?
By The Message in Surat 122.
In the Koran brought by His Final Messenger … we read in surat Al Alaq ….
Proclaim! (or Read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created―
Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood:
Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful―
He Who taught (the use of) the Pen―
Taught man that which he knew not.
{ Translation Yusuf Ali verses 1-5 Al Alaq}
Here were the very first revelations & Here was the Creator in all Mercy to His Creatures – informing us human beings that He would teach us what we know not.
How could we know the Creator? We cannot see, hear or feel? This explains the million and one conjectures, and a million errors. Our Creator Speaks to us in the Koran in Surat 112, teaching us what we don’t know about the Creator. Please read!
112. al-Ikhlas: The Unity,
Say: He is Allah, the One!
Allah, the eternally Besought of all!
He begetteth not nor was begotten.
And there is none comparable unto Him.
We are told in black and white that He begets not. He was not begotten.
I think it’s understandable in our love for our Creator that we have this need to be very close to our Creator so we turn ourselves into sons of God, and daughters of God. ( Asthagh..). This might satisfy our ego, but we are unwittingly in the final analysis denigrating our Creator.
Above all factually it’s a manifest lie because our Creator informs us that He Begets not.Its these considerations that makes using vocabulary when discussing our Creator so important. Because we are expressing something our senses cannot grasp we might fall in error. Human beings can avoid the error by reading His Final Message in the KOran. No wonder its also called the Criterion. Helping us to avoid error.
The last line – There is none comparable unto Him, also tells us that the 1 million pictures we have of him are in error. Whatever picture you conjure in your mind of the Creator cannot be your Creator. It’s simple and beautiful and prevents us human beings even our children from going into error.
These are thoughts that I share with you Oh Khadeeja because your words moved me very much. Thank you my sister, and May Allah Guide Us All to Him and envelope us in His Eternal Mercy! Amen!
I thank DH too. A lot of us learnt much from this rant. In a bygone era, the sisters would have remained silent. As you can see not anymore. WE are ready to proclaim the wonderful rights that is our due because our Creator Gave us that right. You may call us names. You wait, and we also wait .... The day is neigh when each soul answers for every word that escapes his mouth.
No man can do what we women can do, (If Allah Wills), by the Grace of Allah even He spent every waking hour trying.
Alhamdulilahi Shukr.
@aa
I have no idea why no one else put their names forward for the MDP primaries. It could possibly be because as a party they feel that their elected President has been wrongfully removed from office and they possibly want him to be returned to office??
As for all those other things you said, yes, it happens all the time everywhere. often the leaders who do not get the support of the party members often end up leaving the party and in many instances, form their own parties.
A party is a tribe, a family, with a set of values, philosophies and beliefs, shared by its members. If we dont agree with what a party stands for, then we are either kicked out , or we leave, just as it happens with families.
We know 2 people for sure who wanted to run in the primaries - the elected president and vice president of the party.
They were both kicked out, before the primaries were launched. How convenient. Now its a clear field, unless some ones name is put forward, to stop tongues wagging. Just a prediction.
