A decomposing female body has been found on the shore of the Adhaaran Hudhuranfushi resort, a week after a 29 year-old Japanese tourist and her 37 year-old husband were reported missing from the property.
A staff member at Hudhuranfushi confirmed that the body found was female, but was unable to confirm whether it belonged to the missing Japanese woman.
Police Sub-Inspector Ahmed Shiyam told Minivan News that the body had yet to be formally identified and appeared to have been in the water for several days.
‘’The body is too decomposed for us to identify it, but it is clear that it was in the water for a couple of days,’’ Shiyam said. “We are currently running DNA tests, and will get whatever information we can from the results.”
Shiyam said that apart from the missing couple, there had been no other reports of missing persons in the area.
In a statement, the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) said that the resort’s management notified the authorities after noticing the that the couple had been absent for two consecutive meals. The couple were staying in a water villa, the MNDF stated.
“The management team went searching for the couple in their room, but the ‘Do Not Disturb’ board was displayed so they did not open the door. But after there was still no sign of the couple later, the management opened their room they found that they were not inside,’’ the MNDF said.
Police and MNDF were called around 8:40 pm on August 17.
MNDF officers have snorkeled around the island and searched the area using Maldivian Air Taxi (MAT) and Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) seaplanes searching for the missing bodies since the report was filed.
Shiyam told Minivan News that “accidents may happen, but we don’t feel that there is anything to be concerned about with resort safety. We don’t feel the disappearance of the Japanese couple reflects on the resort’s safety procedures.”
Two weeks ago Minivan News reported on a British couple found dead following a quad bike accident on Kuredu Island Resort. Emma and Jonathan Gray had been married just seven days before the accident, when the quad bike they were riding on as passengers collided with a tree on the island. The driver, subsequently identified as Filip Petre, the son of a Kuredu resort shareholder, was seriously injured in the accident.

There is plenty to be concerned about. These incidents are becoming more and more frequent. This is disproportionate to the number of tourists coming to the country.
Even the tourism minister raised concerns about the safety standards (or rather lack of them) on most water bugalows. Even though the water may be shallow, a holiday maker after a few drinks and especially at night can easily get disorientated in the water and get into trouble.
Apart from watch towers, the resorts need 24/7 surveillance of their waters. We should take every measure to prevent further loss of life around the waters of these islands.

MNDF says they have no concern on Resort safety but Tourism Minister is repeatedly expressing her concern on the recent issues and safety of the water bungalows saying she is also afraid because the wooden walkways towards and around the bungalows are so slippery and so on.....
Maybe MNDF is looking in a different angle like not many people died everyday, heheheh

We do not visit them to be under constant surveillance, but to enjoy the freedom and nature's beauty. Besides that, it is usually dark on the beach and in the lagoon so what you suggest is impossible! People will always do stupid things, especially when alcohol is involved. It is Darwinism in action!
accidents happen, even in paradise. i dont think this will have any impact on tourists coming to maldives or not.. on the other hand, when some resort decides to perform false wedding-ceremonies and bite the hand that feeds them, THAT is the sort of thing that will make people go to the caribbean instead and spread the words to their friends.
these incidents have grown a lot more in the last few years. yes we cant put constant surveillance on them. But i still beleive there are a lot of things the management and the govt needs to do. Quality auditors, managers need to take their jobs more serious. There cud b a variety of cause..maybe dey were having sex in water wth DND board and sumthn stung them..maybe they slipped from the stairs and hit their heads. maybe sumthn bit them at snorkeling.... I thin a lot can be made better by making the guests aware of a lot of things around the hotel and in the water. Our waters maybe nice bt it still isnt the safest. hard to beleive but there are guests who dont understand that their feets wud get cut of they stoll on coral reefs...so. yeah.
