Four men arrested for eating during fasting hours

Four men have been arrested after being caught eating in daylight hours during Ramadan, the holy month of fasting.

Police Sub-Inspector Ahmed Shiyam said that two cases had been reported to police and four people had been arrested.

Sergeant Abdul Muhsin said two of the men were arrested near the Alimas Carnival stage last Saturday and taken to the police station, where they confessed they had eaten.

“They were released after making a statement and were given advice,’’ he said.

The other two men were arrested inside Giyasuddeen School, Sergeant Muhsin said.

“They also confessed they had eaten in the school toilets,” he said. “They have both been released now.”

Last year a man was arrested for eating in daytime during Ramadan and was sent to the Criminal Court by Prosecutor General’s office.

The Criminal Court fined the man Rf 500 and ordered to reinstate that day’s fast.

  1. 🙂 I love the Maldives. Getting arrested for eating!

Let the people who enjoy staying hungry stay hungry and let the rest of eat.

Why do you need to push religion down our throats? Is that what you call faith? Is that what believing means? Is that what you call submission to God?

    What a joke!

  5. They ate in the toilet? And someone ratted them out... hmm, talk about a breach of privacy.

This is completely archaic. Yes people should not be flaunting their eating while the rest of us are fasting, but forcing all people not to eat at all. Arresting them if they do and the imposition of our rules on others when it is against basic Islamic principles is unacceptable.

No judge can ORDER someone to continue fasting?! This is ludicrous.

  7. this is not about islam. its madness.
Fasting does not mean you force people to.
i fast not because i will get more sawab or its ordained in religion. i fast because its a part of our slowly decaying culture and fasting is a good spiritual excercise for those who know how to do it.

this thing we do now every once a year is very far from fasting that prophet practiced or intended.

arresting people for breaking fast is a dogmatic result of arabization in this country. its not part of dhivehi or islam. i'd suggest most people who fast just because they have to fast (as mere forms) to acquire more points better not fast..

What a joke is that when you are here to comment to others. Whether you belive or not, Islam is the best. you better to go to hell O boy.

  12. Its sad that anger follows hunger.

AFAIK the guys who do not fast will be punished by GOD . Its not up to us to root out somebody who was eating behind close doors and hand out punishment. Invariably what happens is that some of those fasting, anger erupts out of control and decides to lash out at the perpetrators.
We should try to control and not that.

  14. This is just wrong, somethings should be just left for God to deal with, both fasting and the 5 prayers a mandatory at the same level. Well we don't drag people to police and fine them under the court of law just because someone missed a prayer or doesn't pray.

  15. I thought it was only illegal to eat in public. Why were the men arrested for eating in a toilet.

Also why the difference when it comes to fasting. There are many who do not pray, or who do not give zakaat. Other "alhukan" is up to the person but fasting is strictly enforced? Seriously.

This is all a joke. Just leave practising the religion to the person. Otherwise there's no meaning it just becomes going through the motions

  16. In order to earn Sawabs your intention have to be pure. If you are forced to fast while you are not willing to do so there is no use as you will not be rewarded. By forcing those who are reluctant due to reasons known to them what you do is just making that person misarable and revolt against the religion.
So my opinion is educate them of the benefits instead fines.

  17. You totally changed my world view and bowel movements. Thank you Miki.

I believe you represent the whole Muslim world and internet comment boxes.

    Anyway ...

Tomorrow I will be hungry. Very hungry. I will do anything to make sure that I starve.

I am also going to go around sniffing for food during day time. Yes, on all fours too. I will report anyone I think could be carrying anything that you could digest. Don't care if you consider it food or not.

No mercy. You just can't eat, chew or swallow. Miki will arrange your transport to hell. S/He'd love that. I believe it's free too.

I am going to make sure that the rest of the Maldivians suffer with me too. I don't care if you have a medical condition. I don't care if you need to eat and take pills. I want to see you starve and suffer.

Suffer ... yes, that's the keyword. It's either that or Miki's hell limos. Miki doesn't like people who eat or comment here. Miki is a mean bad ass.

Who the hell am I? It's none of your f****** business, Miki. I will comment when I want and you cannot stop me. This is the internet - not Saudi Arabia.

** Always nice to see the aggressive bastards from the 'peaceful' religion come out to play.

Says:"this is not about islam. its madness."

Your perception may differ from mine but this statement is somewhat correct (at a quick glance)but in a way it can be misleading.

Says:"Fasting does not mean you force people to."

Yes, Of course it's a act of worship between the person who fasts and GOD Almighty. Quran also instructs to advice each other and to remind each other. If you see a man trying to ignite a fire near a petrol shed, what will you do? Obviously stop him and warn him. right! Did you get that? No? Ok.. read more...

Says:"i fast not because i will get more sawab or its ordained in religion. i fast because its a part of our slowly decaying culture and fasting is a good spiritual excercise for those who know how to do it."

You fasts not for sawab (reward) from GOD Almighty. Brother that's a beautiful statement. Did you know if that was where you stopped and exactly why you fast then your fasting perhaps would be the most highest degree of striving (Jihad). Allah Knows Best.

BUT if you think it's not ordained in religion (yes, you are correct and wrong here: Why? Because Islam is not a religion it's a Deen ( Deen means: A way of life, Code of Conduct with the belief in oneness of GOD Almighty): While Religion is a strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny; (ISLAM does not accept this meaning of Religion to be "Deen": But mostly Deen or Din is mistranslated as Religion)

You can check meanings of Religion, Din, Deen: Just do a Google search.

NOT Ordained? I must say you my brother is totally mistaken! It was appointed: fixed or established especially by order or command for all the ages and all the nations of humanity and the fasting that we are supposed to establish is clearly stated in The Glorious Quran & Hadhiths.

Meaning of Ordained: "appointed: fixed or established especially by order or command"

    NOW did it click anything?

Part of the slowly decaying culture?
Lets See: Simple definition of Culture is ..."a particular society at a particular time and place"

And more broader definition is below:
Culture is a definition highly misunderstood and misused, thus the need for an explanation: Culture refers to the following Ways of Life, including but not limited to:

1.Language : the oldest human institution and the most sophisticated medium of expression.

2.Arts & Sciences : the most advanced and refined forms of human expression.

3.Thought : the ways in which people perceive, interpret, and understand the world around them.

4.Spirituality : the value system transmitted through generations for the inner well-being of human beings, expressed through language and actions.

5.Social activity : the shared pursuits within a cultural community, demonstrated in a variety of festivities and life-celebrating events.

6.Interaction : the social aspects of human contact, including the give-and-take of socialization, negotiation, protocol, and conventions.
All of the above collectively define the meaning of Culture.

AND Deen/Din (Way of Life) all that's above inclusive and more. THEREFORE you have misunderstood the meanings of Religion & Deen ; specially pure teachings of ISLAM (Deen-ul-Haqq)

SAYS:"this thing we do now every once a year is very far from fasting that prophet practiced or intended."

Quite true: He did it with conviction as an honest and sincere act of worship:

Let me explain what act of worship is ,meant in the Deen of Islam: "Ibaadha" in Arabic; as mistranslated as worship: from an Islamic perspective is to do all that is good, right and beneficial for yourself and all those who are around us. Praying, Fasting, Reciting Quran, Hajj, Zakath- are part of Ibaadha but just rituals. Key word "sincerity" : by definition it is "open and genuine; not deceitful"---- also from Islamic perspective it is "Purity of Faith" - or most commonly known as "Iklaas" - You must have heard a lot that "Iklaas therikan nethun" is the reason for lot of wrongs or evils of the society exists. For example: Corruption, Hypocrisy, mugging, intoxication, murders, rapes..etc"

The real meaning of "Ikhlas" is as I believe is in Surah Al-Ikhlas , Chapter 112, The Glorious Quran : You can check that out: In short the pure belief in GOD Almighty and his description (definition) and understanding is lacking if there's no Ikhlas.
    -----------------------
Surah 112 - Al Ikhlas ( The Purity of Faith):1.Say: He is God, the One and Only;2.God, the Eternal, Absolute;3.He begetteth not, nor is He begotten;4. And there is none like unto Him.
---[this is a 4 line definition of GOD Almighty:Allah]---

Says:"arresting people for breaking fast is a dogmatic result of arabization in this country. its not part of dhivehi or islam."

If arrested and jailed: I agree with yo
u: btw I believe the article is misleading in saying "arrested". In reality they were taken (escorted) to police station and given advice and freed.

And rest of the part "its not part of dhivehi or islam." is misleading because the notion that advising fellow people for the correct way is not out of touch with culture or deen. It's part of it.

btw.. what sort of a behavior is to "eat at toilets of Schools".. It's nothing private. There are lot of sick people, pregnant women, women in monthly periods, people on voyages, etc who would not fast and will eat each day privately. I'm sure Police will not summon them to their stations.

These four men must have really gone out of their minds to act so foolishly..."eating inside toilets" .. I mean what kind of people will find it as a civilized way to eat. So gross! yuk ..I feel.

SAYS:"i’d suggest most people who fast just because they have to fast (as mere forms) to acquire more points better not fast.."

No, And Yes! longing to get rewards from Almighty GOD itself is an act of worship. That's nothing selfish or wishful thinking. AND I wonder why you would sit an examination if you don't want to pass. Useless that would be.

AND this life is nothing but a test for hereafter. If you simply follow Islam as a so called "cultural" thing, you my friend; is way too far away from the reality. Why? Answers are all above and below!
    ---------------------
"the life of this world is only amusement and play ! Verily, the home of the hereafter is indeed (the eternal life that never end), if they but knew" Quran 29:64
    -----
What you are following is an ideology developed from the generations(mostly) of 1950's onwards- prior generations (mostly) at least tried to their best of knowledge and believed, practiced Islam out of conviction and with logical belief.AT LEAST in Maldives.(Their logic was it's more appropriate to believe in Oneness of Allah and follow the commandments).
    --------------
Allah (swt) explains to us His book the Quran in different ways…
"It is such that We clarify the revelations to a people who think." (The Holly Qur’an 10:24)

"We have sent down the Book(this Quran) to you making all things clear and as guidance and mercy and good news for the Muslims" (Surat an-Nahl: 89).

"This day have I perfected your Deen (way of life) for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your Deen (way of life)". (Soorah Al-Maa'idah 5:3)

“The words of your Lord are complete in its truth and justice. Nothing can change His words – He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. If you obeyed most of those on earth, they would lead you away from the path of Allah. They follow nothing but speculation – they are merely guessing.” (The Holly Qur’an 6:115-116)

    -----------------
Islam is to be believed and practiced with pure conviction.

  30. I supprt Hassan totally. Where is the respect for others rights and others feelings when you eat in public places at a time majority of the people are fasting! Get practical! It can be described as an anti-social behaviour. The Maldivian society at large does not encourage or support it at all. If you want to eat for any reason you could do at your home. Nobody will come and harass you! Eating in public places in Ramadan is like you coming to work drunk everyday and everybody else find it hard to grasp!

  31. for all the people who say they ate privately, and sick people should be allowed to eat , or we shouldn't be forced to fast, (the former two are indeed true), i would like to remind you to use your brain! (of course there's an effect when you deviate from the teachings of islam) firstly, how can it be considered as eating privately, when they took the food inside a toilet, which is used by public? and what sick (ill) person takes their food from home, all the way to a toilet to eat? (ofcourse, only a 'sick' person would do that! but that's another kind of sick) and noone's forced to fast against their will. you do if you want. but you can't eat around publicly when almost everyone is fasting. plus, it is clearly stated in the law. i personally like bismuth's comment and hope everyone else read it too and learnt something from it..

No, the so called "Liberal bloggers" and promoters of "a flawed version of human rights" without understanding the limits of rights in order to honor others rights are "Terrorizing the Masses"

Anni is NOT the Failure! But people like you and your flawed attitudes will definitely make this nation a failed state.

Common... "O boy"! he must have meant "public toilets".. Toilets at a School will be a kind of a "publicly accessed property"! isn't that so?... not so private as the toilet at your bedroom or living room. right! 😉

btw.. don't you find it more ridiculous for these guys to eat at toilets! I mean what kind of ideology does they have? .. for me it's just too gross even to think about eating at Toilets.. & also at a public toilet at a School...tsk,tsk,tsk... Wat a Joke!

  37. Every country has rules and what they generally accept as decent behaviour, and that must be respected by people, and if not some form of control measure must be taken. Already decent behaviour has been eroding, people do not feel shy to commit crime and things that is not socially acceptable. I studied in UK and South Africa. In UK it is not acceptable to smoke in cafe' and in South Africa it is not acceptable to spit on the road. I see many people have given comments that only mocks at the police and indirectly support those who have gone astray on the social acceptable norm that it is not decent behavior to eat in public. In Singapore you could be fined for things that they dont find acceptable such as spitting. In UK it is not acceptable to attend classes late, and students are even expected to apologise. But Maldivians will mock if they are being expected to apologise. And I want to tell Salim that the police is not forcing the people not to eat or continue fasting. But they are only controling decent behavior and discouraging. I see it as a mocking because you mentioned "continue fasting" when you already know that fast must have already been broken when they had eaten. I have seen newswebsites elsewhere also, but the type of comments on this website by some Maldivians only reflect their pride and rudeness.
