Israeli flag burnings and ‘sit-together’ marks tale of two protests on International Human Rights Day

Protests erupted across Male’ over the weekend that saw the burning of Israeli flags and calls to “ban all Israeli medical teams” from practicing in the Maldives, alongside a “silent-sit together” against so-called “religious extremism”.

Protesters burned several Israeli flags in Republican Square and demanded the deportation of seven visiting Israeli eye surgeons, who are holding free eye camps in Male’ and the island hospitals.

Protesters gathered near the tsunami monument on International Human Rights Day, claiming that “Jews would not provide any form of assistance, unless there is a hidden agenda”, according to the website of the Islamic Foundation of the Maldives.

The religious NGO has previously called on the government to “shun all medical aid from the Zionist regime”, alleging the Israeli surgeons “have become notorious for illegally harvesting organs from non-Jews around the world.”

Religious NGO Jamiyyathusalaf has also called on the government to provide citizens with military training “before Jews take over the country”.

President Mohamed Nasheed today met with the doctors the Israeli ‘Eye from Zion’ NGO and said “a vast majority of Maldivians” appreciated the humanitarian work of the doctors.

The doctors “expressed their appreciation for the warm hospitality they received in the Maldives”, according to a statement from the President’s Office, and “also noted that there was a great demand for their services in the Maldives.”

Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Mohamed Didi, said there had been “no discussions” in the Ministry regarding the anti-Israel protests.

“We are not saying anything for or against the protest action taken this week,” he said.

Didi added that the Foreign Ministry was “more involved in state humanitarian projects and inter-faith charity work than the Islamic Ministry.”

“The major roles of the ministry are to raise Islamic awareness and bring scholars from different countries to visit,” he said.

Coinciding with protests opposing the visit of Israeli doctors, the Islamic Foundation published allegations on its website that only two of the seven visiting surgeons from Eye from Zion had at the time been granted licenses by the Maldives Medical Council (MMC).

An MMC spokesperson was reported as claiming that certificates produced by the seven-member Eye from Zion medical staff were not carrying official stamps. However, the spokesperson added that all the surgeons would be able to receive licenses to operate upon clarification of their legitimacy by the Israeli government.

Meanwhile,  a group of 30 Maldivians gathered near the artificial beach on Friday, up the road from the anti-Israel protest occurring at the tsunami monument, holding what they called a “silent sit-together” on International Human Rights Day.

Members at the gathering said they were attempting to oppose wider concerns over growing “religious extremism” in the country.

“Displaying a stark contrast to the loud truck and motorcycle cavalcade of religious conservatives who were protesting against Israeli doctors around the same time by announcing anti-Semitic messages through loud speakers, the youth that participated in the sit-down took a decidedly fresh approach towards protest,” a press release from the sit-together’s members claimed.

“The silent sit-together, conspicuous by the absence of any banners, megaphones, or sloganeering, aimed to send the message that youth are against religious extremism and supported Human Rights, Tolerance and Dignity for all humans.”

People participating in the protest said they were trying to start a “grassroots” movement against religious extremism, but did not wish to give their identities.

  1. There is a big difference between Zionism and Judaism. Judaism describes the Jewish faith whereas Zionism defines the philosophy behind an exclusive Jewish state which is the physical and spiritual homeland meant exclusively for the Jewish people. The latter is a very fundamentalist outlook, and is much reviled, particularly amongst the Arabs.

All Zionist are Jews, but not all Jews are Zionists. There are Jews in many parts of the world. Most of them live in Israel and America. Now all of them certainly believe in Judaism, but not all of them would subscribe to the hard-line exclusivist vision of the Zionists

  4. @ Muad MZ,

Interesting to note that you are one of those who believe that literally copying everything that the Prophet did in his life time is what its means following the "Sunnah" of the Prophet.

    So let's see:-

    1. The Prophet never used soap or shampoo as there were none those days. So we must stop using shampoo and soap.

    2. The Prophet brushed his teeth with a stick (no colgate or tooth brushes). So we copy him and use a stick.

    3. The women wore head to toe clothes and the men wore similar clothes (more or less) to protect themselves from sand storms and to survive in the desert. So we all must wear the same clothes even if we live in any type of climate.

    4. The Prophet was a goat herder. So to "follow the Prophet" we must now start rearing goats in Male' or in New York City if you live there. forget about fishing.

    5. The prophet rode camels and horses to travel from place to place. So now we must get rid of our cars and motor cycles and import some camels and horses to move around. I can just imagine us all hopping around on these animals around the streets of Male.

Must I go on and on?

Our Prophet up in Heaven will now be shaking his head in shame. The Prophet taught the pagan Arabs to be civilized and promoted progress and education. And today we see some of us trying to drag us all back to the Middle Ages literally.

What about our forefather? We claim to have been 100% Muslim country since Maldives converted to Islam. But our ancestors never wore these Arabs costumes nor lived like Arab Nomads. They practiced Islam and lived peaceful lives. Were they not muslims?

  5. President Nasheed should have asked wat's "Zion" and what "eye" refers to. What is the real mission. Ignorance of a president is not acceptable. It's crazy that our president didn't got the time to meet the 12 year old who took second place in an international Quran competition. While he got time to meet Zion and eye

For him there is no right and wrong, for him its the they way we believe and the way we brought up. In some African tribe, they used to kill people for no reason and for them its totally OK. But for us its not OK. But I guess for SFJ it would be totally fine and acceptable coz it the way they live..RIGHT SFG

You said it short and blunt. I completely agree with you.

I would ask you to please comment every once in a while, so as to prove to everyone that you are not hit by lightening for voicing your opinions. I am sure, some by the likes of Heck, would now be trying to convince some vulnerable men / women that Allah has punished you the minute you typed your opinions.

The situation is really pathetic for the Maldivians. And Arabian barbarians are drooling on the fruits of the concoctions of dark ages.

"If you don’t want Zionist doctors, why don’t Salaf bring ‘Halal’ doctors from Pakistan or Saudi? OR Educate such experts so that Maldives would not have to rely on any outside help – whether Jews or Christians or Atheists? Perhaps the ‘Zionists’ have an agenda, but fighting and generating hatred does not solve problems or extinguish their ‘evil’ plots."

That's a bit of an exaggeration. You haven't been listening and paying attention.

We are against Zionist 'baigandu' only.

They can take their Eyes-from-Zion and 'bend and thrust' them in a more suitable place in their own bodies!

  12. I believe strongly that our government must take on an anti-Zionist stand - the movement ignores all human rights and killed and made several homeless.
But at the same time - i believe in tolerence and not taking on any extreme stands in reliogion, or secularism for that matter . the individual person actually knows best what their moral stand is - and i dont think my stand is against islam. I am a true believer of islam and i believe islam is a tolerant religion.

  14. @Ibrahim Mohamed: I agree with you!
So President refused to meet with Zakir Naik, so what dho? Does Adaalath know that President often refuses/avoids to meet the UN Representative to the Maldives? But we do not see the UN employees taking to the streets of Male' with placards and threats?

Muad MZ: No, we (or at least I am) are not trying to criticize Islam (per se), we are criticizing the behaviour of some people who does things in the name of Islam. Prophet S.A.W. mentioned that by the end of time the world would see over 70 different sects of Islam. So why don't you accept this Hadith as is and not fight with other (fellow) Muslims that do not accept your ideology? Surely you can't be a better judge than the Creator of the Universe, because

"Allah will judge between you on the Day of Judgment concerning the matters
in which ye differ." Surat Al Hajj Ayat 69.

As for Arabs, we are not talking about the Arabs who are Christian, Agnostic or Jewish. I was referring to the Arabs who claim to be extremely pious. I am saying this from experience, from having seen the so called Arabs (counting Tasbeehs) served with exclusive French Wines and Mojitos on their trips away from the Holy Land to the Paradise on earth - Maldives. Why won't Adaalath, Salaf or any of you protest against that? Or profiting from selling alcohol, pork and prostitutes to the pious lots are halal?

Yes, I agree with you that Zionists have committed heinous crimes such as the use of white phosphorous, blockades in Gaza, torturing children and removing their organs and selling them for a profit in American black market. As you did, I too have seen these news on Al Jazeera.

While you watch that on the news, we see people getting stabbed almost daily on the streets of Male', children get molested way too often and gay Imams are caught on tape performing gang bangs! Why do we not see the pious lot taking to the streets? Americans are profiting from killing Afghani's and Iraqi's; but you are okay with Americans training our military, using American products and technology and so on. Why the double standards and hypocrisy?

Also, I would like to mention how much we rely on Indian Doctors and Teachers (servants, laborers, etc) who completely reject the Oneness of God and are Idolaters. Why do you not protest against them? You let your babies hear the Adaan at birth but give vaccines blessed by Vishnu?

May God show us all the right path (through logic and reasoning) and bring peace between my fellow Maldivians. Amen.

  16. There were no Israel flags in any of the buildings in this country. So we go to Donad pay a lot of money to print/make Israel flags. Then we pay for the works to Donad for having made the flags. The flags are then delivered to Islamic so called Jamiyyas. The accountant in the Jamiyya pay for the invoices from Donad. Finally the the flags are carried to the protesting sights. More money is spent on petrol and kerosine to burn the flags. And comes the final act. Allah akubaru and sets the flags on fire in the frenzy of chanting protesters. Anyone injured during the ceremony are taken to the hospitals, and the Jamiyyas pay for the medic bills. Well it sure looks llike money well spent on Islam. Maldivian Idiocy heh heh ....

  17. @Musian - Do you honestly believe the things you say? Can you in all seriousness give so little thought to these issues?

So, you think that if a person does not believe in God then they cannot be moral or know right from wrong? That is an interesting view because it is exactly the opposite of the truth. My morality comes from common-sense and from caring for other people, from not wanting to hurt others or see them hurt.

Now, where does your morality come from? You only know right from wrong because you are told what is right by an imaginary daddy in the sky who offers you rewards if you obey and threatens you with damnation if you disobey him. This is not morality, it is coercion. It is bullying, it is immoral. Are you seriously telling me that if Allah didn't forbid it then you would go around stealing, raping and murdering? Well would you? If not, why not?

Also, I think if you look at the history of the world you will see that most horror, torture, murder and pain is inflicted by religious people. You won't find many atheist suicide bombers or terrorists for example. You don't see many atheists burning witches, outlawing free thought and expression or stoning people to death or beheading them. Read the Bible or Quran and you will find incitements to murder, rape and enslave - where is the morality in all this?

As the US Physicist Steven Weinberg said, "With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion."

It's ironic that you say I live in a fantasy world because I base my life on what I can see, hear, feel, experience and observe objectively.

If you look at people like Heck, all he can do is quote meaningless scripture or hurl insults, what he cannot cope with is using his mind.

So I have a question for you and him; why do you not believe in Zeus, Appollo, Mars, Shiva, Arzaz, Lokee, Wotan, Ra? When you have an answer then you will know why I don't believe in your god.

  18. @ Heck

Exactly the kind of outburst that I expected from a guy like you who is unable or unwilling to use your brain!

Here is the challenge that I repeat.

“There is nothing in Quruan about making women wear “black” let alone any clause to say that one must cover your face.”

Your pathetic response is to ask me "if I thought the Quruan was a fashion magazine". Answer: Not at all!

But, you failed to quote any clause in the Quruan or any Hadith of the Prophet requiring Muslim women to wear "Black Head to toe clothes". Why? because there is none! All you can do is make a stupid comment off topic. That's all.

Similarly all these stupid practices that your radical buddies seem to follow are "cult practices" and not part of Islam.

Actually I have no problem even if all of you wore "Batman costumes" or even "Eskimo outfits". My problem is that the so-called Religious leaders are scaring young women to wear these Arab hijabs by threatening them and condemning them to hell if they didn't wear them. No wonder simple folks quickly don these clothes even if they boil under them in this heat.

We object to the fact that you perverts want underage girls to marry and prevent them from getting education - all in the name of Islam.

We find it offensive that the radicals are preventing young children being vaccinated - again claiming that its haraam!

We find it ridiculous that the Mullahs preach and make people only dream of heaven where they are supposed to enjoy all the wine and as many women as they desire, but to refrain from enjoying any comforts in this world.

Ninety percent of the time these Mullahs talk about how women should behave in Islam as if there is nothing else in Islamic teachings except something or other to do with women!

The Satanist Radicals are not satisfied to just practice their medieval beliefs, but are hell bent on converting all the rest of us to follow their hocus pocus by stirring fear amongst the innocent public.

Is that what true Islam is all about?

Basically this is family feud from ancient times between the children of Abraham. The hatred of Jews that you scream of are those that have been repeated by the Arabs for centuries and have no place in this day and age. These morons think Sunnah is trying to have same amount of hair in their body as the prophet, and wearing a similar dress as of him, which infact is impossible as prophet mostly wore a simple shovel. You morons should learn that Sunnah means his way of fulfilling religious duty. Not the way he walked or wore his clothes or shaved. get a life you morons.

  25. Muad MZ, you seem aren’t you been arrogant? You seem to know everything. Are you making a literal interpretation of following prophet? Your suggestion and comments lacks substance for the simple reason that it will be impossible to strictly follow the footsteps of prophet not alone even an ordinary person. If we have followed what you guys interpret as “sunnah” all Muslim’s will be shepherds herding sheep’s with four wives. This doesn’t make sense. Does it?
So people like you have picked what is convenient and suites you and ignored the rest. Can you please NOT call others not educated enough to express their thoughts. I wonder why you choose “West” to enlighten your “knowledge” since you hate Israel so much. You are in no place to judge Arab leaders who support Israel and question their “religious” belief.

Arab Israel issue is not about RELIGION but about LAND.

  47. @SFJ So you are basically saying the route cause of all evil things is religion. Can you really prove it. As far as me and rest of the world understand every religion calls for peace and respect for others. You have gone as far as ancient times but forgot to mention the crimes and barbaric actions they did before they knew nothing. You forgot to mention that women have no respect in those times and buried alive. You forgot to mention the strongest is the powerful in those times and there is no rule of law. You mentioned a scientist name to back your argument, how could when he is just like you. You rate him above you. How could you believe him and who told you right and wrong. For your information I said, for you right and wrong is decided the way things they see in a particular society they are living. I have no problem if you believe in our God or not its up to you. For me I believe in God and thats what keeps me from crime and inhumane acts. If there are people like you (unbeliever) than this world would be in turmoil like the way it was in ancient times when there are very few people believe in GOD. I guess you dont believe in prophets when history shows they live in this world to show us the right path. You believe in theory of evolution which was totally not proven scientifically. How come you became so ignorant when God have given you wisdom and knowledge. Please think about the way you were born. You are not an accident you are more than that. Basically think everything in this world and then I would kindly request you to come up with an answer.
