Five people assaulted in Hithadhoo house

Five people have been injured in a night time assault at Feeneez house in Hithadhoo island, Seenu (Addu) atoll. The victims were watching the World Cup at 12.40 a.m. when they were attacked with sharp objects and wooden sticks.

They received various injuries including cuts. Three of the victims have been released after treatment at the Hithadhoo Regional Hospital. The other two are under observation due to the severity of their wounds.

The police have apprehended five people suspected of being involved in the assault. All the suspects have criminal records for theft, assault, looting and other crimes.

Police investigations are continuing.

Street bike stunt performer Chris Pfeiffer shows off in Addu

Street bike champion Chris Pfeiffer has amazed “dozens” of supporters in Hithadhoo, reports Haveeru.

Pfeiffer, who has won the World Street Bike Free-style Riding Championship in Germany four times and secured a place in the Guinness Book of Records, was touring Addu Atoll last week showing off his skills as part of a marketing campaign for Red Bull. He will perform in Male on Friday.

Haveeru noted that  “But overall, we believe that this event was a huge success. So we thank the assistance and support of police and Addu residents.”

“I should say that the event held at Feydhoo was a huge success. But the Hithadhoo event did not attract much supporters, as the timing was not good,” Red Bull’s distributor in the Maldives, Mohamed Fahmy, told Haveeru.

Boat capsizes in Hithadhoo

A 38 year-old man is being treated at Hithadhoo regional hospital after his row boat capsized and he swallowed a lot of seawater.

The incident occurred at the entrance to the Hithadhoo harbour at around 5.15 pm.

Police report that two men were on board the 15 foot boat when a large wave caused the boat to capsize.

Both men were rescued by a passing dhoni. Police report that man’s condition is now stable.

Police hold awareness program in Hithadhoo

The Baa Thulhaadhoo Police Station and Thulhaadhoo Crime Prevention Committee held an awareness programme for the community of Baa Hithaadhoo, raising the issues of illegal drug use and child sexual abuse.

Police said a religious viewpoint was also given to further highlight the seriousness of these issues.

Six police from Baa Thulhaadhoo Police Station, 10 members of Thulhaadhoo Crime Prevention Committee, two teachers of Thulhaadhoo School and 27 students of Thulhaadhoo School took part in the programme.

Second accident victim dies

The passenger on the motorbike involved in the accident on the Seenu Hithadhoo link road has died.

Of the three people involved in the accident, Rukshaan is the second person to die including the driver of the car, Moosa Didi.

The passenger, 19 year-old Rukshaan Ali, died while receiving emergency treatment at IGMH.

According to Haveeru, Rukshaan sustained many broken bones including his hips and legs.

Four arrested in brewing bust

An alcohol brewing operation conducted by four people has been discovered in Seenu Hithadhoo by police.

According to police, the four brewers were conducting the operation in an abandoned house on Hithadhoo. Police were alerted to the operation after receiving a tip off yesterday evening, and raided the premises to find three single litre bottles of  prepared alcohol which were confiscated along with a brewing still.

Two men were taken into police custody in relation to the incident: Mohamed Humaul, 21 and Ahmed Anees, 18. Police said two boys aged 14 and 15 years old were also involved. All four are from Seenu Hithadhoo.

The matter is now being investigated by the Drug Enforcement Department and the Hithadhoo police station.
