Crane collapses on house

A crane working on the construction of Machangoalhi Cocoage in Male collapsed yesterday evening.

The accident happened yesterday evening around 5:08 pm, when the crane fell onto neighbouring the neighbouring building, Machangoalhi Faransaage.

With the assistance of two more cranes, the collapsed crane was lifted at around 12:28 am. MNDF fire and rescue worked with the police and several construction companies to carry out the salvage operation.

Faransaage sustained some damage and the residents have now been moved into a guesthouse.

Girl dies after boat capsizes

A 13 year-old girl died when a boat capsized in Laamu Dhanbidhoo yesterday at around 4:15 pm.

The accident occurred during bad weather conditions as the boat was shipping sand from a nearby island, according to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF).

The girl has been identified as Hawwa Aroosha of Fithuroanuge, Laamu Dhanbidhoo.

A 23 year-old man and three children were also on board when the accident happened.

One of the children, a 15 year-old boy, has been taken to Laamu Gan regional Hospital with serious injuries.

MNDF corporal praised for bravery

The MNDF have congratulated corporal Mohamed Vishal of the Marine Corps for his initiative and bravery, after saving a man from a gang attack in December.

At round 9.30 pm on 10 December, Hassan Rasheed Abdullah, assistant director of the drug rehabilitation centre, was attacked by a group wielding box cutters and sustained many injuries.

According to MNDF, Vishal overcame many obstacles and took Rasheed to the IGMH hospital on his motorbike.

In recognition of his efforts, the Maldives police service had passed on a message of thank to Corporal Vishal.

Critically ill pregnant woman brought to Male’

A pregnant woman in a declining condition was brought to Male’ by the MNDF coast guard.

Azeeza Mohamed, 37, of Thaa Hirilandhoo, was on a boat travelling from Thaa Burunee to Male’ when her condition deteriorated so rapidly the captain requested help from the coast guard.

A vessel was dispatched with a doctor and two nurses from Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, IGMH.

The coast guard made contact with the vessel carrying Azeeza around 5.18am, and she was brought to Male’ at around 7.10am.

She is now being treated at IGMH.

Drifting speedboat rescued at sea

A speedboat that ran out of fuel and was drifting with the currents in Baraveli Kandu last night has been rescued by MNDF Nothern Area Command.

The boat was travelling from Raa Alifushi to Lhaviyani Hinnavaru carrying six people and a child. According to MNDF they left Alifushi around 10:45 pm.

The speedboat,  ‘Zaako’, belonged to Mohamed Ismail of Lhaviyani Hinnavaru, Jambuge, and ran out of fuel around 1.40 am.

The MNDF dispatched a coast guard launch to find the stricken vessel, eventually discovering it at 3:00 am, two miles west from Lhaviyani Madivaru.

The speed boat was towed into Lhaviyani Hinnavaru harbour at 3:40 am, and all on board were reported to be fine.

Speaking to Minivan News about the incident, Lieutenant Abdul Ali of the MNDF said such incidents were becoming “more and more common.”

“Those in charge [of vessels] hould realise how long the journey will take, and if ensure they have sufficient amounts of fuel,” he said.  “It is important to be cautious before travelling at sea.”

When asked about what actions the coastguard had taken to try and reduce the number of incidents, Ali claimed the authority continuously gives advice and holds many awareness programs.

MNDF urged all sea travllers to contact the nearest MNDF area command if an incident should occur, or if that number is not known, to dial the toll free emergency number 191.

Two children in row boat rescued by MNDF

Two children in a rowboat who were swept away by strong currents have been rescued by MNDF Northern Command.

The two children were travelling from Haa Alif Muraidhoo to Haa Alif Baa Rah, when their boat was pulled off course by strong currents. Both children tried to desperately row towards Baa Rah but failed.

When MNDF got news of the incident, they dispatched Coast Guard harbour craft 103 to the scene. The boys were rescued near Haa Alif Alidhoo around 6,14pm.

Both children are reported to be fine.

Fire on MNDF launch

An MNDF vessel caught on fire on Thursday, injuring some of the officers on board.

The incident occurred on the morning of 31 December, at 8.45am, while launch number 58 was moored in the harbour behind Kalhuthukalaa Koshi.

Lance Corporal Abdhul Rahman, of the electric and mechanical engineers, who was working on the vessel sustained burns to his arm and leg.

MNDF reports that the fire was caused when the battery short circuited and ignited the petrol tank.

MNDF Male’ area inaugurated

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Malé Area was inaugurated by President Mohamed Nasheed yesterday.

The Male’ area is being formed as part of the MNDF decentralising its operations.

The president highlighted the importance of decentralising MNDF into different area commands. As a result, he said, army officers could now work closer to their families.

The president also mentioned the economic benefits to the local communities from the MNDF bases.

He said Rf65 million, spent annually on salaries, healthcare and catering for MNDF staff, would directly benefit the local economies.

MNDF have already established an area command centers in southern, central and northern parts of the country.

Heavy rain floods 11 islands

Islands in two atolls have been flooded following heavy storms currently over much of the country, Haveeru reports.

The two affected atolls were Noonu and Shaviyani; Noonu atoll had nine islands flooded and Shaviyani two.

Mohamed Maahidhu, the councilor of Noonu atoll said some islands had as much as three to four feet of flooding.

According to Haveeru, some people have temporarily moved into friend’s and relative’s houses because of the damage caused to their own homes.

The Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has been working with residents to drain the water from the flooded islands.

According to the meteorological office, the country will experience heavy rain over the next couple of days.
