President Waheed departs to Egypt for OIC summit

President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has departed on an official visit to Egypt for participation in the 12th summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the President’s Office website has said today.

The summit, which started last Saturday ( February 2), will continue until February 7 and is expected to see leaders or senior representatives for 57 OIC members states gather to discuss greater political and economic cooperation, according to the StarAfrica news service.

Back in August 2012, President Waheed attended the fourth extraordinary session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Conference in Saudi Arabia following an invitation from King Abdulla Bin Abdul Azeez.

Waheed to address Organisation of Islamic Cooperation

President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan is to address the fourth extraordinary session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Mecca.

The session, which began on Tuesday night, will focus on the situation in Syria, issues faced by people in Palestine, the problems confronting the Muslim community in Burma, and the situation in Mali.

Before departing from Male’ on Sunday Waheed also stated his intention to secure funds for the Ministry of Islamic Affairs’ mosque fund.

Local media last week reported an Algerian businessman as having donated MVR3.1 ($US200,000) to the fund.

President Waheed to attend OIC extraordinary session in Saudi Arabia

President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan has today embarked on a visit to Saudi Arabia at the invitation of King Abdulla Bin Abdul Azeez to attend the fourth extraordinary session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Conference.

According to the President’s Office, President Waheed has said a key part of the visit would be discussing the ongoing situation in Syria, while also establishing “close relations” with the Islamic community and discussing potential financial assistance from fellow delegates.

President’s Office spokesperson Abbas Adil Riza told Minivan News that while addressing Syria at the OIC emergency summit was the key focus of the visit, the president would also be talking with participants regarding different types of possible financial assistance for the country.

Dr Shaheed visits New York to lobby Maldives’ candidature for Human Rights Council

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Ahmed Shaheed travelled to New York last Wednesday to lobby and seek support from UN Member States for the Maldives’ candidature to the Human Rights Council.

This is the first time the Maldives has sought membership for a major UN body. There are four seats for the Asian Group, and Maldives will be running against Malaysia, Thailand, Iran and Qatar.

Dr Shaheed met with representatives from several countries, and held a special meeting with members of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) to gain support for candidature.

Several countries pledged their support to the Maldives, including Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq among others.

Dr Shaheed had visited the Human Rights Council in Geneva in early March to announce and lobby the Maldives’ candidature for the post.

The elections will be held during the second week of May at the UN Headquarters in New York.
