Respect the dignity of the courts, urges Civil Court

The Civil Court of the Maldives yesterday issued a statement calling on the country to refrain from any acts that would smear the respect and dignity of the court, and lead to a loss of public confidence in the judicial system.

The Civil Court’s statement followed a court hearing conducted in the Criminal Justice Court regarding the arrest and detention of People’s Alliance party (PA) Deputy Leader and MP Ahmed Nazim, and ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP Mohamed Musthafa, after the pair were summoned to court on charges of bribing a Civil Court judge and MPs.

Police lawyers in the Crminal Justice Court claimed that both the MPs colluded to bribe a Civil Court judge with US$6000 and a two way air ticket for a trip abroad, and had influenced cases in the Civil Court filed against them.

“After a case is investigated, the deserved sentence shall be passed on judges of this court just like any other citizen, without exemption,” said the statement. “Disclosing information of a case to the media before the investigation is concluded would create doubt and be an irresponsible act.”

The court said that publicising information about a case relating to a judge before it was proven in court, whether it was leaked through an individual, could potentially be considered an attempt to destroy public confidence in the judiciary.

“A large number of cases related to civil rights and various interests are presented to the Civil Court,” the statement said. “Cases that Civil Court judges work on are those related to individuals and cases related to national interest.”

MPs Nazim and MP Musthafa were released by the Criminal Court despite a police requesting and extension of their custody while the investigation was conducted. Police did not mention the name of the Civil Court judge whom they alleged had been bribed.

  1. The courts and judges cannot expect the public to respect and hold them in dignity by referring to the constitution and law.

It would bode well for the judges to remember that respect is earned.

  2. Courts needs to know that there days of corruption are coming close to an end. Be it in this world or the near death you might face which only takes you to the first stage of punishment in the grave. Imagine how painful it would be for you when your soul comes out of your body, especially when you misuse your high power given to help the weak.

  3. Now the 3 senior POLICE OFFICERS want to be judges. So, Anni must be closed all Courts. And should change the name of Maldives Police Service to MALDIVES POLICE COURT. then this 3 guys do anything to the poeple. Shaving or hair cutting...etc. then they should not go to Court to get permision to arrest anybody. Then they can play with small boys, girls and their mothers. These police men dont have behaviour, they are like animal jumping to the poeple. but these guys forget about the public only they think abount Anni. coz he his paying for them with big salaries and higher ranks. These men didnt care the publice only they care for Anni. but Anni is giving public money not Anni's own money as salary. So, these 3 guys must be CUT to size.

  4. Courts, you have failed to protect the innocent victims of tyranny, you do not deserve respect... Courts, respect the dignity of Allah's beautiful creation which you cruelly stole from their Mother's when you released murderers into the community! Courts, respect the dignity of the downtrodden, those robbed of their rights and those who had been stripped of their dignity by your greed and immorality! Courts, give the terrified masses back the dignity you stole from them through your evil corrupt ways. Dignity is lost through fear. You have rendered the oppressed masses less than human because they are terrified of the gangsters you protect. People are terrified because the very instutution they wish could help save them and give them justice simply denigrates them and hands them over to the savage pack. No way, die hard you murderous tyrants, you have forfeited your right to dignity for ever!!! I say, down with the courts, up with the 'People's Courts' and Courts, RESPECT THE DIGNITY OF JUSTICE ITSELF< because pure JUSTICE IS your craetor whom you will be judged by in the hereafter...

  6. all corrupt judges should be sacked before any confidence in courts could be restored. With them the courts will not deliver justice.

    Vellazinee's work is much appreciated.

  7. Dignity is earned. Just because he is a judge, does not mean everybody else have to bend backwards.
The only time I had the experience of our courts, judges, they acted as if they are from a different planet. Sack them all and replace ones with better ones.
