The Criminal Court of the Maldives has sentenced a man to two years imprisonment and 25 lashes for sexually assaulting a Japanese woman on Kulhudhufushi in Haa Dhaalu Atoll.
The Criminal Court, which identified the victim, said she was walking down the ‘Giolhilaashi Hingun’ street in Kulhudhufushi on November 6, 2010, when she was approached by Adam Shareef who sexually assaulted her.
“Adam Shareef stopped [the victim] and [sexually assaulted] her according to his own admittance.”
An authority at Kulhudhufushi told Minivan News that the Japanese citizen was a volunteer music teacher at Kulhudhufushi school.
”Whatever took place happened on that street,” he said. ”It is a very narrow street where people do not walk very often.”
”Another islander reported the incident to police, not the Japanese citizen,” he said, adding that the incident occurred during broad day light in the afternoon.

This punishment can only come from mullahs. First of all, two years behind bars is too harsh. Secondly flogging is against basic human rights.

I think its a good punishment. If a smaller punishment was given, it would give way for some who supports these type of actions to not be scared of doing it themselves.
I hope the courts did not just do this because it was a foreign women. The protection of women should be the same no matter race, religion, country or colour as Islam teaches. When harsh punishments are given, even the non-muslim women will see how Islam is harsh, but always in favour of the victim. It will show that no one person represents Islam because Islam is much bigger than just one person or even a whole generation of humans. It is something which cannot change. It is so firm in itself, that even when someone who is Muslim commits a crime, he is punished as equally as would a non-Muslim be.

What in the world does Sexual Assault mean!? There are different levels of assault worth different punishments. This punishment is only worth the bare minimum of physical offenses.
These perverts who have probably ruined someone's life get 2 years. Someone gets 10 years for smoking a joint and not harming anyone but themselves. MPs are spending the little money that is left in the country. The judges, well most of them are not even qualified to be judges, and the most powerful of them who basically control the whole country are the most corrupt remnants of the last regime. Justice doesn't exist in this country. Unless the judiciary is cleaned up, this country is doomed!
