Expat worker injured in fall

A Malaysian national, working on the construction of the new parliament building in Male’, has sustained head injuries after falling three stories, , local media has reported.

The safety near the first floor broke his fall. That’s why the injuries weren’t that serious. He suffered head injuries because it hit the metal pipe of the safety,” an official from the construction company involved told Haveeru.

The man, said to have fallen at 10am today is reported to be in a stable condition at ADK hospital.

British media identify tourist drowned off Summer Island

British newspapers the Sun and the Daily Mail have identified the tourist killed at the Summer Island Village resort earlier this week as 34 year old Stuart Chance from Lincolnshire.

Mr Chance is reported to have travelled to the Maldives with his parents, who are regular visitors to the resort in Male’ Atoll. He is said to have drowned whilst snorkelling on Tuesday (August 20).

The Foreign Office is reportedly looking into Mr Chance’s death, though local police reportedly told Mr Chance’s family that his death was being treated as an accident.

Snorkelling incidents are the most common cause of tourist fatalities in the Maldives.

Man dies following Fuvamulah motorcycle accident

A 28 year-old man injured in collision between two motorbikes on Fuvamulah in Gnaviyani Atoll has died.

The police identified the man as Mohamed Shujau of Atha house.

According to police the accident occurred last night at around 8:25 pm on Mohamed Jamaluddeen Naibu Thuthu Road. Shujau received serious injuries to his head, nose and face.

Police said the other motorbike involved in the accident was driven by two minors, one of whom was admitted to Fuvamulak Hospital ICU and later brought Male’ for further treatment.

Honeymooning tourist suffers “extensive” leg injuries from boat propeller

A female German national honeymooning at the Reethi Beach Resort has suffered serious leg injuries after being hit by the propeller of a boat while diving, local media has reported.

The incident reportedly occurred around 11:00 am on Saturday (June 1).

The honeymooning tourist was transported to Male’ to receive medical treatment for her “extensive” leg injuries, according to local media.

Court extends detention of man accused of killing traffic police officer

Police have confirmed that a motorcyclist who collided with and killed a police constable in the earlier hours of Friday morning is being treated in Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

A police spokesperson told Minivan News that 27 year-old Hassan Afeef suffered injuries in the collision, but would not give details.

‘’Although he is in hospital, he is under police charge. The court has granted a 15 day extension of his pre-trial detention,” the spokesperson said.

The passenger on the motorcycle was also arrested, but was released by the Criminal Court when police sought to extend his detention.

IGMH’s spokesperson Zeenath Ali declined to provide information of the injuries Afeef had received, with local media claiming he had requested the hospital withhold information about his condition.

Previously media reports stated that Afeef was taken into custody and then to IGMH.

In a statement issued yesterday, police alleged Afeef had a previous record of assaulting and intentionally crashing into traffic police officers, and had previously been arrested.

Twenty-two year-old Constable Misbah Abdulla was killed while manning a checkpoint near the President’s jetty in Male’, after the speeding motorcycle collided with him.

According to police, the collision threw the officer 80 feet from the checkpoint. He was taken to ADK hospital but later died of his injuries.

Speeding motorcyclist kills traffic policeman

A 22 year-old traffic police officer, Constable Misbah Abdulla, died today in Male’ after a speeding motorcycle collided with him near the president’s jetty, just metres from police headquarters.

Police said Constable Misbah was manning a vehicle checkpoint when he was hit by the speeding motorcyclist around 4:00am.

According to police, the collision threw the officer 80 feet from the checkpoint. He was taken to ADK hospital but later died of his injuries.

Local newspaper Haveeru, for whom Misbah previously worked as a printer prior to joining the police force, alleged the motorcyclist, 28 year-old Hussein Afeef from Foakaidhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, had a previous record of assaulting traffic policeman.

Afeef was taken into police custody and taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for medical treatment.

Second crash

Following a second serious traffic incident on Friday, two men are being treated in Hithadhoo Regional Hospital after their motorcycles collided on the Addu link road near the convention centre.

Hassan Ahmed and Zaheenuddin Saeed are receiving emergency treatment, according to local media.

Victim missing following speedboat crash found dead

The body of a person missing following a speedboat accident on Sunday has been discovered, police said.

Police identified the person as Dhaudh Mohamed, 28, from the island of Kulhudhufushi in Haa Dhaalu Atoll.

According to police Dhaudh was discovered yesterday at about 5:58pm during a search.

The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) coast guard said the dead body was discovered by divers near the Reethi Rah resort.

In a statement issued yesterday, police said they were informed that one person was missing from the speedboat at 3:00pm yesterday.

The marine police department and coast guard began searching for the missing person upon receiving the information he was missing.

Yesterday morning at 8:45am a speedboat travelling to Male’ from Reethi Rah collided with an oil tanker.

According to local newspapers, some of the passengers aboard the speedboat were critically injured and one passenger was reported to have been paralysed.

Newspaper ‘Haveeru’ reported alleged the captain of the speedboat was asleep when the accident took place. The paper reported that the captain of the speedboat was now under arrest.

The hospital and police have not provided information to any media regarding the injuries received to passengers.

Yesterday the police confirmed that an Indian and a Philippine national were among the eight injured in the accident.

Police said the eight victims were admitted to ADK and Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and were receiving treatment.

Both vessels were damaged in the incident.

In December 2012, a collision between two speed boats left a Finnish tourist dead and nine other people injured.

The collision occurred between an express speedboat service to the island of Hulhumale’ – which is located near to the capital of Male’ – and another vessel belonging to the Bandos Island Resort and Spa property.

In January 2013 this year, five people received minor injuries in a collision between two ferry services travelling to and from the the islands of Hulhumale’ and Hulhule’.

In February 2010, 11 people were injured when a Hulhumale’ ferry travelling to Male collided with a speedboat coming to Male’ from the Rannaalhi resort with tourists aboard.

Oil tanker collides with speedboat injuring eight passengers

Marine police are investigating a collision involving an oil tanker and a speedboat on its way to Male’ from One and Only Reethirah Island Resort.

According to police, an Indian and a Philippine national were among the eight persons injured in the accident.

Police said the eight persons had been admitted to ADK and Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and were receiving treatment.

Both vessels were damaged in the incident.

Police said the marine police department was now trying to determine the cause of the accident.

Car crashes into shop in Male’

A car has crashed into ‘Zee Mart’ located on Lonuziyaarai Magu in Male’, according to a report by police.

According to police, the car was travelling at high speed when it crashed into the shop, causing severe damage to both the shop and the car.

Police said there were no casualties reported.
